Maharaj expresses frustrations over coming up against rampant Aussies 0

Posted on October 26, 2023 by Ken

South African spinner Keshav Maharaj expressed his frustrations on Thursday over what he described as “a very tough tour” coming up against a rampant Australian batting line-up.

With Australia roaring to 475 for four at stumps on the second day of the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the Proteas had conceded over a thousand runs and taken just a dozen wickets in their last two innings of bowling. Maharaj caught-and-bowled Steven Smith for 104 for his first wicket of the series in the final Test of the rubber.

“It’s been a really tough tour,” Maharaj admitted. “At the start of this game we expected the pitch to turn a lot more. I think the weather has been a big factor, the pitch getting a bit wet.

“I haven’t changed much, I’m still working hard. Sometimes you just have these ebbs and flows in your career, maybe my body is a bit tired, I don’t know. I wish I was a machine that you could just plug in.

“These are good pitches in Australia and there’s not as much spin as we are used to elsewhere in the world, although there is bounce you can work with. And bowling when you’re behind the eight-ball is tough, with spread fields and in-batsmen.

“It’s about being consistent and I probably haven’t been, I’ve dished up a few, which is something I need to address. It’s probably about keeping the mind fresh rather than bowling more,” Maharaj said.

South Africa’s first-choice spinner said Australia have one of the best batting line-ups in the game and they have been able to dominate thanks to the platform laid up front. David Warner scored a double-century in the second Test in Melbourne, and his opening partner Usman Khawaja was 195 not out at the end of the second day in Sydney.

“Fair play to Australia, their opening batsmen have created a good foundation for them to play freely. But you can’t take anything away from their batsmen, they have very sound, clear plans and they stick to them.

“Usman is a different player against spin than he was here in 2016 and in South Africa in 2018/19, he has played all around the wicket, taking his scoring opportunities and he has very good hands.

“Travis Head is probably one of the best timers of the ball in international cricket and he has played very well, scoring fifties in all three Tests. It comes from the platform set up front, it gives him licence.

“It’s one of the more experienced batting line-ups and the top-order makes sure there is a strong base so the middle-order can play aggressively. The Australian batting line-up is one of the best in the world,” Maharaj said.

Rapid recycles & direct rugby sees Sharks motor into early lead, before splutter & then running rampant again 0

The Sharks motored into a 12-0 lead after just 16 minutes, thanks to rapid recycles of the ball and tremendous direct rugby, but they then spluttered and allowed the Lions back into the game before eventually running rampant from the hour mark to win 37-10 in their United Rugby Championship match at Kings Park on Friday evening.

It was all smooth sailing for the Sharks at the start of the derby and, in the ninth minute, they kept possession through nine phases, after a strong carry by eighthman Phepsi Buthelezi, going right and then left before inside centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg broke the defensive line and passed inside for wing Makazole Mapimpi to score.

With 67% possession in the first half, the Sharks were soon back on attack and, after bashing away on the line against the stout Lions defence, they went wide, two short loop passes being followed by fullback Boeta Chamberlain knifing through for the try.

But the shift in momentum perhaps came straight afterwards as flank Jeandre Labuschagne misjudged the restart, dropping the ball, and Lions wing Edwill van der Merwe was on hand to kick through and score the try.

The Lions gained belief to go with their tireless efforts on defence, and despite making just 35 tackles to the visitors’ 105 in the first half, the Sharks went into halftime just 12-7 up.

Flyhalves Curwin Bosch and Jordan Hendrikse traded scrum penalties in the first six minutes of the second half, but the Sharks eventually showed why they were top of the log in southern hemisphere competition when SuperRugby was killed by Covid and remain one of the most highly-rated teams in Europe.

The turnaround came out of the blue as Chamberlain charged down a clearance by Lions fullback Andries Coetzee, centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg gathered and his pop pass found just the right player in scrumhalf Grant Williams, whose sheer speed from just outside the 22 made his try impossible to stop.

Having defended so much, perhaps fatigue set in for the Lions in the final quarter and they began to make basic errors. Centre Marius Louw strayed in front of the kicker, Jaden Hendrikse took a quick tap for the Sharks, Sikhumbuzo Notshe burst clear and Siya Kolisi rounded off the try.

The ever-busy Mapimpi then kicked through a dropped ball in the Lions backline, his second kick being a touch of Messi-like class, as he grabbed his second try at the death.

Lions roar to 1-Day Cup title, led by rampant batting 0

The Central Gauteng Lions, led by their rampant batting line-up, roared to a hat-trick of 50-over titles on Thursday night as they beat Western Province by 62 runs in the One-Day Cup final at the Wanderers.

With the top four all scoring half-centuries, the Lions raced to 358 for five in their 48 overs after being sent in to bat, the start of the final being delayed due to morning rain.

Paceman Lutho Sipamla then took five wickets as Western Province were bowled out for 296, but they would have been most frustrated by losing three wickets to the part-time off-spin of Reeza Hendricks, who finished with career-best figures of three for 18 in three overs.

Those three wickets put an end to whatever hopes were remaining for Western Province after a strong start. Hendricks came on to bowl with the visitors on 217 for three after 33 overs, needing 142 more runs off 90 balls.

Eddie Moore, who had shown his white-ball value with a run-a-ball 82, targeting the short boundary towards the grass embankment, moved into switch-hit position way too early, Hendricks fired a quicker, shorter delivery outside leg-stump and the cramped reverse-pull went straight to short third man.

Western Province’s obsession with the short boundary continued when, two balls later, Daniel Smith did the same thing. The youngster scored 24 off 29 balls, overdoing his attempts to sweep, both conventionally and reverse, when there were better scoring opportunities straight down the ground.

Earlier, Tony de Zorzi was once again rampant for Western Province at the top of the order, causing the Lions some anxiety with a great effort of 88 off 69 balls.

But Sipamla also took two wickets in an over, the 25th, when he had De Zorzi caught at long-on and then bowled an excellent first delivery to Zubayr Hamza, having him caught behind for a duck.

George Linde kept the visitors in with a slim shout as he belted 42 off 32 balls, before Malusi Siboto dismissed him and last man Nandre Burger off successive deliveries.

The Lions innings was constructed in excellent fashion with openers Josh Richards and Ryan Rickelton putting on 142 in 22 overs.

Richards began the onslaught by taking on the new ball and hammering nine fours and two sixes, but the in-form Rickelton was quickly underway too.

The left-handed wicketkeeper/batsman took over the aggressor’s mantle from Richards and scored freely in a fiery 75 off 63 balls, which included 14 fours, before he was bowled by left-arm spinner Linde.

Richards ploughed on though, adding another 71 in little more than 10 overs with Reeza Hendricks for the second wicket, before being superbly caught one-handed by Beuran Hendricks, diving full-length at wide mid-on, off Nandre Burger, for 94.

Reeza Hendricks maintained the Lions’ dominance though with a stroke-filled 69 off 64 balls, while Mitchell van Buuren turned the knife with a phenomenal 62 off just 36 deliveries.

Evan Jones provided the finishing touches to a record 50-over score for the Lions with his 30 off 16 balls.

Even on a brilliant batting pitch, the Lions had done enough to bat themselves out of reach of Western Province.

De Villiers raves about rampant form of De Allende & Esterhuizen 0

Posted on May 19, 2022 by Ken

The rampant form of two South African centres based overseas has not gone unnoticed by one of the Springboks’ most celebrated midfielders, with Jean de Villiers this week heaping praise on Damian de Allende and Andre Esterhuizen.

De Allende is the incumbent Springbok No.12 and still a crucial part of the Munster side that is in the European Champions Cup quarterfinals and in fourth place in the United Rugby Championship, while

Esterhuizen has been a roaring success at Harlequins. The former Sharks player is very much a specialist inside centre though, so in terms of the Springboks, he is only likely to get called up if De Allende is injured.

“Damian has been crucified at times for the way he plays and some people only see him as an abrasive midfielder,” De Villiers told a URC media briefing. “He was getting boxed into that role over here.

“But Damian has been phenomenal the way he plays for Munster and the Springboks, the value he brings is massive. He was probably one of South Africa’s top three performers at the last World Cup.

“His distribution skills are fantastic and his defence is aggressive, it’s like having another loose forward in the midfield. He’s also so good at competing on the ground, him slowing the ball down makes it easier for the rest of the defence.

“And there’s no reason to think he’s slowing down, he gave another great performance on the weekend when Munster beat Exeter. Damian is critical for the Springboks and his partnership with Lukhanyo Am is phenomenal,” De Villiers said.

The former Springbok captain, speaking in his capacity as a SuperSport analyst, was also full of praise for Esterhuizen and said his departure from the Sharks has been the reason for many of their attacking frustrations.

“Andre has been a big loss for the Sharks and has been fantastic for Harlequins, his partnership with flyhalf Marcus Smith really just works for both of them.’

“The Sharks have lost both him and Lukhanyo Am and they are lacking in midfield. And with Aphelele Fassi out injured too, they are not able to fire the way they were when those two were available.

“I think Makazole Mapimpi has been affected as well. He and Lukhanyo are just on the same wave-length and the Sharks have missed Mapimpi’s X-factor with Am,” De Villiers said.

Former Scotland lock Jim Hamilton, another URC analyst and someone well acquainted with barging over the opposition during his 63 Tests, is also a big Esterhuizen fan.

“Esterhuizen has been carving it up over here, I can’t believe what a signing he’s been for Quins. He would be one of the first names on my team-sheet,” Hamilton said.
