Lions have to tie down most dangerous beast: written-off Springboks 0

Posted on August 17, 2021 by Ken

The British and Irish Lions will have to tie down that most dangerous of beasts – a written-off Springbok team – in the first Test in Cape Town on Saturday with South Africa’s hooker, Bongi Mbonambi, saying all the talk about the home team being underdone is merely fuelling their fire.

There was more than a hint of colonial patronisation on Tuesday in some of the questions to Mbonambi from the British media, which were along the lines of “you haven’t played proper rugby for so long, while the Lions have been involved in the wonderful Six Nations, how are you going to cope, you poor dears?”

Let’s not forget that the Springboks were also roundly written off before the World Cup final and most of the team that will play in the first Test beat the tourists in the guise of the SA A team last week. Mbonambi’s parting words, to a question from a South African journalist, were defiant.

“There’s been a lot of talk about us being underdone, and that’s just throwing more fuel on the fire,” Mbonambi growled. “The whole team is really looking forward to Saturday and we know we have to step up and show we are here mentally and physically, there is an intensity we have to match. We have the whole week to get ready for that and we will make sure we pitch up on Saturday.

“We are at a bit of a disadvantage, that’s the reality of Covid, but we plan to make a good start, to start with great intent and get ourselves on the front foot. But it’s an 80-minute game and we need to be on that front foot for the whole 80 minutes. We know where our strengths lie and at training the coaches have been really lifting the intensity,” Mbonambi said.

Even if the Springboks are a bit underdone, it is still not going to be a spa day for the Lions. The Boks showed that by overwhelming England’s much-vaunted pack in the World Cup final and the SA A team exposed cracks in the Lions camp for the first time last week when their unrelenting defensive pressure brought mistakes.

“We’ve been trying to make training harder than the game will be because we know there is a certain intensity we have to match. We know we are representing the whole nation and there is a massive step up to be made. We’ve worked hard on the training pitch and the work has been done on analysis as well,” Mbonambi said.

The 30-year-old Mbonambi was one of the players who tested positive for Covid, but he will start on Saturday with the knowledge that he can go all out and empty his tank because there is quality front row cover on the bench in the form of Malcolm Marx, Steven Kitshoff and Frans Malherbe.

“Because of the quality of front rows we have available to us, we see the props as pairings. Is it more important to be there at the start and sing the anthems or to be on the field for the final whistle? Who knows, but if you are starting there are certain things you have to do and there’s a specific role for those coming off the bench. The players have bought into this,” coach Jacques Nienaber said.

Attractiveness of cricket depends on the quality of the contest & Arthur says subs will allow that 0

Posted on January 05, 2021 by Ken

The attractiveness of top-class sport depends on the quality of the contest and Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur says the International Cricket Council will have to consider allowing substitutes in this time of Covid-19.

Sri Lanka have been decimated by a spate of injuries in the first Test against South Africa at Centurion, and if the ailment which saw Dinesh Chandimal limping off the field after the last ball of the third day and then lying down on the boundary edge proves to be something more serious than cramp then they could be down to just six fit players.

Arthur blamed the unprecedented number of injuries on a lack of time to properly condition the players for the rigours of Test cricket, due to the effects of Lockdown and the pressure it then puts on the schedule as administrators try to fit more into less time.

“With Colombo under curfew, the players were not allowed to leave their homes so they had to do a lot of their conditioning there. This South African tour was then on-off, on-off, but eventually we did get into camp together. But then the Lanka Premier League T20 meant we lost them for another month and only got them back the day we left for South Africa.

“So you can throw all of that into the melting pot, it probably all played a role. I hope Dinesh only has cramp or we only have six players to finish the Test, I’m afraid I have a feeling its something more serious but we will see how he pulls up in the morning. But it’s not good for anybody, for our team or the TV audience and I will be chatting about it with the ICC Cricket Committee that I am on,” Arthur said on Monday evening.

“We knew some of our players would be in danger with the short preparation time which is why we brought 21 players over here. It’s difficult with trying to fit in franchise competitions and 2021 is going to be very busy for national teams. Getting the balance right is very important and conditioning and having enough time for preparation is crucial. We didn’t get enough time, but if we had had ample time for preparation and getting the players’ conditioning loaded up, then we wouldn’t be in this dire situation we are in now.

“I see India lost one of their bowlers today in their Test against Australia and I suspect there will be more injuries. The workloads are just too much with players having to deal with Covid and quarantines as well. If the world was normal right now then we would not be in this situation and guys would be conditioned. But I’m certain allowing runners and substitutes will need to be looked at at ICC level,” Arthur added.

Sri Lanka will go into the penultimate day of the Test still 160 runs short of making South Africa bat again with only four or five wickets remaining, but the popular former Proteas, Australia and Pakistan coach was able to quip about his team’s desperate situation.

“It’s lucky we have 21 players here otherwise Grant Flower [batting coach] would be batting at three in the second Test at the Wanderers and I’d be at four! But we will get 400 tomorrow and then [part-time medium-pacer] Dimuth Karunaratne is going to take six wickets and win us the game!”

Sharks need new captain and hooker after Bismarck ban 0

The Sharks will have to make a change at hooker and appoint a new captain for the next month after Bismarck du Plessis was suspended for four weeks by Sanzar on Sunday for petulantly kicking out at the head of an opponent during the match against the Chiefs at Kings Park.

Du Plessis’ act of gross unsportsmanship came just three minutes after the Chiefs had had their hooker, Hika Elliott, red-carded, and subsequently suspended for one week, for charging into the back of Tendai Mtawarira’s head with his shoulder at a ruck, almost immediately transferring all the pressure back on to the home side.

Matters became even worse for the Sharks when Frans Steyn was red-carded for a dangerous tip-tackle before the half-hour mark and his hearing is set for Monday.

While those two senior players let the side down so badly, the other 13 players on the field rallied magnificently to sneak a 12-11 victory over the Chiefs.

Kyle Cooper and Monde Hadebe are able replacements for Du Plessis in the front row, but the issue of who takes over the captaincy is less clearcut.

Flyhalf Pat Lambie or eighthman Ryan Kankowski would appear to be the frontrunners.

Director of rugby Gary Gold also faces a tough decision once Du Plessis returns to action on April 19 as this is the Springbok’s second incident of foul play at a crucial time this season, following his assault on Victor Matfield in the Sharks’ loss to the Bulls in Pretoria three weeks ago. Does Gold trust that the fiery hooker can mend his ways and remain disciplined under pressure for the sake of his team or does he take firm action against a repeat offender?

The matches that Du Plessis will miss are at home to the Western Force and Crusaders, the visit to Ellis Park to play the Lions and the return fixture against the Bulls in Durban.
