Springboks to be vaccinated soon 0

Posted on June 07, 2021 by Ken

Covid-19 vaccines are not yet freely available to most South Africans, but the Springbok rugby squad is going to get early vaccinations before they embark on their hectic schedule of international games both at home and overseas.

The Springboks, as well as those named in South Africa’s Olympic Games squad, will be getting the last thousand doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine used in the Sisonke project to inoculate health workers. If these vaccines are not used in the next week or so, they will go to waste.

The South African Medical Research Council (MRC) are behind the Springboks being vaccinated, saying it will enable them to travel much more easily by the middle of June and do their jobs, fulfilling their ambassadorial roles for South Africa. Waiting for the Pfizer vaccinations would not be practical because that requires two doses 42 days apart and then another 14-day wait before recipients are cleared for travel.

SA Rugby, whose financial survival depends on the Springboks getting back on to the field and playing this year, have said they will not comment on the matter, but sources close to the Springbok team have confirmed they are going to be vaccinated soon.

The Springboks host Georgia for two warm-up Tests on July 3 and July 10 before heading into their high-stakes series against the British and Irish Lions. After that the Rugby Championship starts in August with two Tests against Argentina in South Africa, before the Springboks are on their way to Australasia, where travel restrictions are very strict, to play the remainder of the tournament.

The move will be seen as controversial in some quarters because there has already been lots of criticism of ‘queue jumpers’ getting the vaccine before the over-60s who are meant to be protected first.

But the Olympic Games are scheduled start in less than two months on July 23, so those participants don’t have time to wait.

MRC head Professor Glenda Gray has said elite sportspeople will be part of the many clinical trials that will be ongoing while the vaccines are being rolled out nationwide. With case numbers rising, the country is widely predicted to go into a third wave of infections as it heads into winter.

South Africa is behind most developed nations in terms of vaccine roll-out and the Springboks, who have not played since winning the World Cup in November 2019, are in danger of falling behind the rest of the rugby-playing world.

Measure of tremendous loosie depth that Smit can only get top-flight game with Invitation XV 0

South Africa is famous for its loose forwards and it is a measure of our tremendous depth in that department that Roelof Smit, who toured with the Springboks in 2016, can only get a game of top-flight rugby when he turns out for the Toyota Invitation XV to play the Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

A 25-man squad for the Invitation XV was announced on Wednesday and includes a fully-fledged Springbok in wing Jamba Ulengo, who played a Test against Wales in 2016.

Smit was chosen for the 2016 end-of-year tour as an openside flank, having burst on to the scene that year as one of the Bulls’ young stars. His only appearance on that tour was against the Barbarians, and although he scored a try he did not play in one of the Tests against England, Italy or Wales and so is not considered an official Springbok.

And since then he has suffered numerous injuries. Even a move to the Lions has not helped and he has fallen down the pecking order there as well after being knocked down by another spate of injuries. Last year he only returned to action in October, but suffered a calf injury in the new year and then yet another knee injury at the end of February.

Ulengo made a fine start to Super Rugby Unlocked action last October but has since rather faded from view at the Lions. But he has picked himself up numerous times in his career and Saturday gives him an opportunity to get himself back into the limelight.

Also amongst the backs named in the Invitation XV is Innocent Radebe, one of the most exciting schoolboy flyhalves in the country whose senior career has also been dogged by much bad luck. He was named by Peter de Villiers as his Eastern Province captain, only to fracture his hand three minutes into his first game in the kick-off series at the start of this season.

WP in discussions with 2 global equity partners – Rasool 0

Posted on June 03, 2021 by Ken

Western Province rugby are in discussions with two potential equity partners, chairman of the board Ebrahim Rasool announced on Tuesday.

The embattled union notoriously rejected an equity offer from MVM Holdings, who have since invested heavily in the Sharks, and WP Rugby recently endured the embarrassment of some of their own clubs asking SA Rugby to put the Western Province Rugby Union under administration because they believed the union was insolvent.

But Rasool said the organisation is not in as dire a situation as some reports have indicated.

“We are on the verge of detailed discussions with two global equity partners. The legal processes have started with the exchange of documents for due diligence. We are past the stage of huisvra, asking if we can visit, and are at the point of announcing the engagement. It’s just a matter of deciding who has the best dowry? We have a liquidity challenge because of no crowds, but there is no solvency crisis.

“We have engaged with SA Rugby after a request from certain clubs that we be placed under administration. Having looked at our financials, SARU has concluded that the allegations we were bankrupt are completely unfounded, we are completely solvent. We will be going through a hand-holding exercise with them in this time of short-term challenges, in a spirit of co-operation,” Rasool said in a media briefing on Tuesday.

The head of Western Province Rugby’s professional arm added that he was loving the revival of the Stormers team’s fortunes in the Rainbow Cup, which currently sees them in second place, four points behind the Bulls, who they play in their next fixture in Pretoria on June 4.

“We have had a turnaround of note on the field, two away wins has been a real revival. I think coach John Dobson has absorbed criticism and has lifted and inspired the players. I think the game-plan now will produce results. The fortunes of the Board have also had a Lazarus-like revival. We have been able to re-sign key sponsors, which shows confidence in the administration.

“We have a six-person committee that is working with SARU and looking at our property situation. We need their expertise and we need sustainable management of our assets, which is why we’re getting outside opinion, external, objective advice. We’re looking at a more sustainable deal and while we were more reactive with MVM, this time we’re doing all the proactive work,” Rasool said.

Advertisers say ‘but wait, there’s more’, but WP say there’s far less 0

Posted on June 03, 2021 by Ken

Advertisers may love to say “But wait, there’s more”, but for Western Province rugby it is a case of it being far less.

At least when it comes to the money they are spending on players, and in particular on young Springbok fullback Damian Willemse.

Recent reports have alleged Willemse is earning R5.6 million a year to play for the Stormers, linking the extraordinary salary to allegations of reckless spending at the troubled union.

But Stormers coach John Dobson on Tuesday lashed out at the unethical reporting of individual player’s salaries and stated that the figures were wrong in any case.

“We have done very well to retain most of the squad we have until 2024 and we are still 15.3% below the salary cap. So we are certainly not throwing money at players as alluded to, and that’s with several Springboks staying, even though some of them were offered more elsewhere. Some players were even approached outside the transfer window.

“A line was absolutely crossed when Damian Willemse had an incorrect salary published, the figure was considerably off, it is much less than reported. To speculate about someone’s salary and then not get it right affects both the player and the cohesion of the squad. He’s a 23-year-old who is playing superbly and is desperate for Western Province to be successful,” Dobson said.

Dobson also confirmed that negotiations with 2019 World Player of the Year Pieter-Steph du Toit are ongoing, saying that the talismanic Springbok has a strong affinity with the Western Cape.

“We’ve been talking to Pieter-Steph the whole year and he wanted to get back on to the field first before making any decisions. He has not signed anywhere overseas yet and we have planned for both scenarios – him staying with us or leaving – in our budget. But when a global star comes on the market, no South African franchise would be able to stand against the offer.

“But Pieter-Steph has got family and business interests in the Western Cape, he’s a big part of the team and the region, and he and his agents have been very transparent. Trying to match an overseas offer – if it’s a million euro or more particularly millions of yen – would break our salary cap, that would be about one-third of the salary cap on one player. But maybe he’ll go away for a short time and then come back,” Dobson explained.

People have a distorted understanding of values, but I believe:

    • Financial riches are not of greater importance than an honourable character;
    • It is better to give than to receive;
    • Helping someone for nothing brings its own rich reward.

“The highest standards are those given to man by God. They are the old, proven values of love, honesty, unselfishness and purity … allow these God-given principles to govern your conscience.

“As you live according to these divine standards, God’s best for you will outshine all the plans you can make for yourself.” – A Shelter From The Storm by Solly Ozrovech
