CENTURION – The solid plan and clinical execution of Kieran Vincent made sure that any dreams of a challenge to him would be still-born as the Zimbabwean cruised to a four-shot victory in the KitKat Cash & Carry Pro-Am at Irene Country Club on Sunday.

Vincent went into the final round tied for the lead on 15-under-par with James Mack, and there were 11 other golfers within five shots. But the 26-year-old gave them no chance as he fired a brilliant, bogey-free six-under-par 66 on Sunday to finish on 21-under and clinch a comfortable victory.

Vincent picked up his first birdie at the par-four sixth hole and the turn was fertile territory for him as he then reeled off a hat-trick of birdies from the ninth to 11th holes. Vincent sank a superb 40ft putt for birdie on the par-five 10^th, and then hit an equally excellent approach to a foot on the par-four 11^th to pick up another shot.

The likes of Malcolm Mitchell and Jacques Blaauw did appear briefly in his rearview mirror, but Vincent settled the deal with birdies on the last two holes.

“It hasn’t quite sunk in yet, but I’m here on an invite so I’m super-grateful to KitKat Cash & Carry for this opportunity,” Vincent said. “I’m very excited because we did a lot of good things today and a lot of hard work has gone into making this first professional win with my caddie Alec a reality. To have my mother and sister in the crowd was also so special.

“Any time you win, it’s a huge boost, wherever it is. I have a long season ahead and there’s still a lot of work to do.”

Vincent is hoping part of that long season will be the Olympic Games tournament in Paris, and his golf in the first two events of the new Sunshine Tour season – he finished tied-fourth in the FBC Zim Open – certainly fits the bill in terms of climbing the world rankings. He was number 439 in the world coming to Irene Country Club, but he is the leading Zimbabwean in the rankings.

“I’m not sure if I’m 100% there yet, but playing good golf will take care of that itself,” Vincent said.

Vincent was stalked by Mitchell on the front nine, with the latter reaching the turn in four-under to be just a stroke behind at one stage. But a double-bogey on the par-three 13^th and another dropped shot on the 14^th were crucial lapses by Mitchell.

Blaauw also legged it up the leaderboard with a round of 67 that included just one bogey, finishing in third place on 16-under-par.

Mack struggled to a 73 on Sunday and finished on 14-under-par, in a tie for sixth.

Our DP World Lions women’s team find themselves in a de facto final for the One-Day Cup at the Wanderers on Saturday and in those situations, your success comes down to your plans and your execution thereof, according to head coach Shaun Pretorius.

The #PrideOfJozi take on the HollywoodBets Dolphins in the last round of fixtures and need to win with a bonus point in order to claim the title. It’s a straightforward equation, nett run-rate will not come into it because beating the KwaZulu-Natalians will give the DP World Lions their sixth victory of the campaign, compared to the five of the opposition.

“We’ve got to win with a bonus point and according to CSA, they will not be looking at nett run-rate to split us,” Pretorius said. “So to do that, obviously all the right boxes are going to have to be ticked, but the important thing is to win all the small phases of the game.

“It’s all about making sure you win all those small moments you can celebrate, like if they score 30 in the powerplay then we want to score 35. We are in a really good space and the dynamics of the team are very good at the moment.

“It’s an unofficial final, we will embrace that and it’s going to come down to who executes best. We will still play according to our plans and then we have to execute those. It’s no good having great plans and then not backing them up with good field placements or good shots,” Pretorius said.

The DP World Lions began the campaign superbly with three straight wins, but a torrid November, with lots of call-ups for representative sides, saw them then lose three in a row. But coach Pretorius kept faith in his charges and the repayment for that backing came through in March with back-to-back wins over the SWD Badgers and Western Province reigniting our Pride’s title hopes.

“At the break in the season we were in fifth place and now all of a sudden we are in contention to win the competition. This is a big one for us and the ladies have done really well to get here. It’s been a tough season and hard on the bodies, especially since this is the first season of professional cricket.

“But the standards have definitely picked up and I am just so thankful to CSA, the sponsors and our Lions CEO, Jono Leaf-Wright, for empowering these ladies,” Pretorius said.

While having to win with a bonus point is always a tough challenge, Pretorius says the Pride have the advantage of playing at the DP World Wanderers Stadium and they hope the famous venue will become an intimidating arena for the visitors.

“Playing at the Bullring is an advantage for us, it’s our backyard, our own conditions. The DP World Wanderers pitch is always a good wicket whether you bowl or bat first, it stays consistent through the day, it’s not going to become more up-and-down. But all the rain we’ve had might impact how quick the outfield is,” Pretorius said.

The Dolphins will bring a strong spin attack to Johannesburg and it is important the DP World Lions batting line-up does not become bogged down. Strike rotation will be important and our Pride certainly has the batters to put the visiting bowlers under a lot of pressure.

Not for the first time this season, the Sharks passed their test in terms of determination and effort, but failed when it came to execution and taking chances, their 24-21 defeat at the hands of Ulster allowing the Bulls to overtake them on the final United Rugby Championship log and snatch a home quarterfinal.

And, with the Sharks finishing fifth and the Bulls’ fourth, it means the KwaZulu-Natalians will have to travel to Pretoria to take on the Currie Cup champions at Loftus Versfeld on the weekend of June 4 to try and keep their URC hopes alive.

Given what was at stake in Belfast, it was a poor display by the Sharks. Soft defensive moments cost them in the first half as Ulster rattled up a 17-0 lead, and then, although they dominated most of the second half, the Sharks were not accurate enough to turn that into tries. Until the last five minutes, when they scored twice to lend respectability to the scoreline.

“The guys played with a lot of energy, they played their hearts out and I’m very proud of the guys for the courage they showed,” coach Sean Everitt said. “The way they fought back justifies that.

“But our first half was not great, our defence was not sharp enough and we gave Ulster two tries they really did not have to work for.

“The second half was a different story and we had opportunities. We played some really good rugby to get into good positions. But unfortunately we lost the breakdown battle, Ulster put a lot of pressure on us there and they defended really well.

“But we played some of the best ball-in-hand rugby we’ve produced this season, we had good territory and field position, and credit to the bench for the huge impact they made,” Everitt said.

It was always going to be a tough test playing one of the Irish powerhouses away, and the Sharks now need to find a way to win at Loftus Versfeld, where they have not enjoyed a good time in recent knockout matches.

“Coming to the Kingspan Stadium was tough, it’s not an easy ground to play at. Ulster are a big and physical side.

“Big lessons were learned, but we are still very disappointed, it was a game that got away from us. We could have … ,“ Everitt mused without finishing his sentence.
