David Warner has been a nemesis of South African cricket for a long time, but one could only salute the stroppy left-hander for his vintage double-century in his 100^th Test which gave Australia complete control of the second Test at the MCG.

With the build-up to his landmark Test being surrounded by talk of how much longer he would feature in the longest format – his previous century was nearly three years ago – and off-field drama as he sought to overturn the leadership ban imposed on him after his scurrilous ball-tampering actions in the previous Test series against South Africa, Warner was under real pressure at the MCG.

But with Kagiso Rabada having dismissed the 36-year-old in his last five innings, Warner made the bold statement that he had perhaps been treating bowlers with too much respect and he was going to return to his old, aggressive self in the second Test.

Warner was true to his word and his innings was a high-quality display full of all the attributes that have made him a great Test batsman: he brought an almost manic intensity to the crease, he was positive and committed to every shot he played and every run he scampered, driven by an immense hunger that saw him plough on through severe cramps brought about by searing temperatures that touched 40°.

Warner produced a typically flashy statement innings on his big day at the cathedral of Australian cricket. Not only did he become the eighth Australian to score 8000 Test runs, but only the second (and 10^th overall) to score a century in his 100^th Test. He was not satisfied and went on to become only the second batsman, England’s Joe Root being the other, to made a double-century in his 100^th Test.

The lover of sports cars – he owns a McLaren and a Lamborghini Huracan – emptied the tank on Tuesday at the MCG and whether he still has the desire to fuel his continued presence on the Test stage, with daunting tours of India and England to come, remains to be seen.

Let’s hope he continues to grace the most important stage of the game because, whatever you may think of Warner the person and his antics, he is a box-office entertainer.

Bongi Mbonambi has been a key figure in the rampant Springbok pack that has spearheaded their hold on the No.1 ranking in world rugby, and Sharks coach Sean Everitt says the hooker is raring to go for his new team, his presence rubbing off on the rest of the squad.

Mbonambi will play his first game for the Sharks since leaving the Stormers in the rousing United Rugby Championship clash with the Bulls on Friday night at Kings Park and the veteran of 48 Tests has been roaring out encouragement to his team-mates all week .

“Bongi has a lot of experience and he sets a really good example,” Everitt said on Thursday. “He was fully prepared when he came to training and hit the ground running.

“As an all-round hooker, he’s one of the best in the world and certainly brings a competitive edge to our team. He really motivates and encourages the youngsters.

“Our scrums and lineouts have gone well this week and Bongi brings a lot of confidence which rubs off on the others, so he adds a lot of value,” Everitt said.

Although the frustration of having so little control over the rugby calendar is very real for Everitt, he has been a happy man this week with his Springboks back and a small crowd allowed to support the KwaZulu-Natal team at Kings Park on Friday night.

“A lot of preparation goes into games, so it has been frustrating to have all those cancellations, but we control what we can control and we are just happy to be playing.

“What is even more exciting is that spectators are going to be able to watch, it’s the first crowd we will have at Kings Park in a very long time.

“I was very confident that our Springboks would play this week too, especially after last week’s match was postponed, and we are very happy to have them. We’ve picked a formidable team, even though not all of our strongest side are available,” Everitt said.

Amongst the other key performers on Friday night will be Siya Kolisi, who Everitt described as “probably the form loose forward in world rugby at the moment”, and Lukhanyo Am.

Am has exuded immense composure and skill at outside centre for the Springboks this year, but he will be playing at inside centre against the Bulls. Everitt believes the captain will display some of his other many qualities.

“Lukhanyo is playing at 12 because we believe Jeremy Ward plays his best rugby at 13. Lukhanyo did a really good job for us in the 2017 Currie Cup at inside centre, he excelled in terms of his playmaking ability and he can still lead the defence from 12. He will also be alongside a young flyhalf in Boeta Chamberlain,” Everitt said.

Migael Pretorius was chosen for the Proteas squad as a fast bowler but on Monday he snatched an extraordinary last-over win for his Knights team with the bat in their T20 Challenge match against the Cape Cobras at Kingsmead.

Pretorius, coming in at No.8, was facing Ziyaad Abrahams with a virtually insurmountable 16 runs needed off the last three balls.

The 25-year-old heaved the next two deliveries over the leg-side boundary for sixes, leaving four runs to get off the last ball and keep his team’s hopes of a playoff berth alive.

Abrahams delivered a superb yorker just outside leg-stump which Pretorius missed, but the bowler had astonishingly overstepped, gifting a no-ball extra as well as a free hit.

Abrahams again fired a full ball into the pads, but Pretorius did exceedingly well to dig it out with sufficient timing to beat the despairing dive of George Linde on the midwicket boundary.

The Knights had been chasing 168, the highest total of the competition so far, and Raynard van Tonder (42 off 40) and captain Pite van Biljon (29 off 25) had laid a solid foundation and given them a chance.

Left-arm spinners Linde (4-0-20-1) and Siyabonga Mahima (4-0-31-2) were once again the Cobras’ most effective bowlers.

The Cobras, having won the toss and elected to bat, came out with a more attacking approach with Zubayr Hamza finally getting the opportunity to spend a prolonged time at the crease and show his quality with a commanding 77 not out off 49 balls in a welcome return to form.

Kyle Verreynne was also at his attacking best as he scored 45 off 31 deliveries.

Seamer Alfred Mothoa took two wickets at the death to finish with two for 32, but leg-spinner Shaun von Berg was the pick of the Knights bowlers.

Constantly at the batsmen, he took two for 23 in four excellent overs.
