Bulls take on Griquas with just one more win needed 0

Posted on November 12, 2014 by Ken

The Vodacom Blue Bulls have won five of their nine Absa Currie Cup matches this season and they know that just one more triumph is all that is required to clinch a place in the semi-finals as they take on the GWK Griquas at Loftus Versfeld tonight.

Griquas, with just one away win to their names this season – a shock 21-18 triumph over the Sharks in Durban at the beginning of September, are not expected to halt the momentum of a two-match winning streak for the Bulls, but home coach Frans Ludeke is taking nothing for granted.

“Griquas, throughout the season, have been very competitive and they had two very good wins against the EP Kings. Especially in that last game, they had a very good second half and used broken-field very well. They have a strong pack and a good rolling maul, and it is going to be a huge battle on the gain-line and in the set-pieces,” Ludeke warned.

Griquas coach Hawies Fourie will be worried that injuries to five frontline players will have robbed his team of their momentum after the win over the Kings, but for Griquas tonight’s game is all about winning and giving themselves a chance of finishing in the top six and therefore avoiding any relegation playoffs.

“Injuries have plagued us this year, it is a problem with which any union struggles, but we’ve gotten the short end of the stick this year. It makes preparations very difficult and it disrupts any momentum we might have had.

“We still want to finish in the top six and we need to put in a winning performance against the Blue Bulls if we want to achieve that. But it is going to be difficult, now even more so in light of the many injuries. Hopefully we can produce some magic come Saturday,” Fourie said in verifying his concerns.

Bulls don’t have to worry about permutations against Griquas 0

The Vodacom Blue Bulls go into the final round-robin match of the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division, against the GWK Griquas at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, without having to worry about all the permutations that so often confuse the issue at this stage of the season.

Thanks to collecting nine points in the last two weeks, against their main rivals for fourth place on the log – the Free State Cheetahs and the Pumas, the Bulls now just need to beat Griquas to assure themselves of a place in the semi-finals.

The clarity of the situation has also allowed coach Frans Ludeke to make six changes to the team, most of them rotational as they eye out the semi-finals.

Handre Pollard, the newest Springbok flyhalf sensation, will start off the bench on Saturday, a wise move giving the youngster the chance to catch his breath after a dizzying last week and reintegrate himself with the Bulls ahead of the knockout games. Ludeke said there is still a 5% chance that a niggling ankle problem will keep Pollard out, in which case Tian Schoeman will be the reserve flyhalf.

The scrum is one area where the Bulls have really shone in the latter stages of the Currie Cup, but Ludeke will nevertheless field an entirely new front row, with Springbok Marcel van der Merwe starting at tighthead, Bongi Mbonambi at hooker and Morne Mellet in the number one jersey. Callie Visagie and Springbok Werner Kruger will be on the bench.

The rotation continues at scrumhalf with Piet van Zyl starting ahead of Rudy Paige, but as the Bulls surely transit towards the semi-finals, there is one backline position where Ludeke is perhaps still unsure of who the first-choice should be.

Springbok Bjorn Basson starts on the left wing on Saturday in what will probably be his last chance to supplant Sampie Mastriet, who has made great strides in his game this season.

William Small-Smith will return in the number 13 jersey instead of JJ Engelbrecht, who has been stood down as a contracted Springbok – a ridiculous decision by SA Rugby that will not benefit anyone.

Engelbrecht has missed large swathes of the season due to injury and desperately needs to string some games together to rediscover his old form. Instead, he will be forced to sit on the sidelines until next year and will not be able to push for a place on the end-of-year tour.

“The presence of Marcel and Handre will give the team a big boost, they are quality players who produced a high standard in the Rugby Championship. The players working for each other will make us a dangerous team and you can see the team-work, the players complementing each other, and we’re getting momentum, playing off the front foot and scoring tries. But that will only happen if there’s work off the ball,” Ludeke said at Loftus Versfeld yesterday.

The coach will be hoping for a repeat of the display against the Pumas last weekend in Nelspruit, when the Bulls romped to a 37-6 victory.

“Last week against the Pumas was our most clinical performance and I feel like we will be peaking at the right time, which is vital. We need to be quick to spot the big moments because they swing momentum your way,” Ludeke said.

Bulls team – 15-Ulrich Beyers, 14-Akona Ndungane, 13-William Small-Smith, 12-Burger Odendaal, 11-Bjorn Basson, 10-Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9-Piet van Zyl, 8-Jono Ross, 7-Jacques du Plessis, 6-Deon Stegmann, 5-Grant Hattingh, 4-Paul Willemse, 3-Marcel van der Merwe, 2-Bongi Mbonambi, 1-Morne Mellet. Griquas end Pampas title defence 2

Posted on May 07, 2012 by Ken

Fullback Rudi Vogt finished with 21 points as the GWK Griquas ended the title defence of the Pampas XV when they beat them 26-18 (half-time 17-6) in their Vodacom Cup quarterfinal in Kimberley on Friday.

Griquas seemed to have the match in the bag when they led 23-6 after 50 minutes, but a dazzling comeback by the Pampas XV closed the gap to 23-18 before the home side tightened up, used their forwards to regain control and ended the match the stronger side.

The Argentineans did not help their cause by conceding a flood of penalties at the breakdown, allowing sharpshooter Vogt to kick seven of them, and their adventurous style of play was not helped by some dreadfully poor passing in the first half.

Griquas were happy to grind out the victory in the knockout match, using their hardworking forwards, who were an exceptionally well-knit unit.

The Pampas XV were obviously keen to keep ball in hand and, after Vogt and flyhalf Benjamin Madero traded penalties, it got them into trouble as Griquas eighthman Leon Karemaker forced them back over their own tryline to concede a five-metre scrum.

The Griquas scrum was rock-solid all game and, from that wonderful platform, flank Marnus Schoeman tried to go straight over the ruck to score. He was initially repelled, but then showed great strength to carry the ball wide and pass to lock Ligtoring Landman, who lived up to his name by dotting the ball down from some distance away.

Vogt missed the conversion, but the Griquas scrum continued to dismantle the famous Pampas set-piece, the disrepect reaching a peak when they nabbed a tighthead in the 14th minute, leading to an offsides penalty, which Vogt slotted from just inside his own half and from quite an angle (11-3).

The Pampas XV then put their counter-attacking approach to good use when wing Facundo Barrea and scrumhalf Martin Landajo burst into Griquas territory and won a penalty, which Madero kicked (11-6).

Griquas were happy to keep the ball among their forwards for the rest of the half, their pick-and-goes, wonderful rolling maul and powerful scrumming earning Vogt two more penalties (17-6) before half-time.

Two more Vogt penalties early in the second half, the first after a wonderfully precise and penetrative rolling maul, pointed to normal service being resumed after the break.

At 6-23 down, the Pampas perhaps had good reason to stick with their attacking approach and wing Manuel Montero burst clear at the back of a lineout before his chip-and-gather created the space for outside centre Gabriel Ascarate to score at the corner flag.

The try of the match followed on the hour mark as most of the Pampas team handled the ball from the kickoff, the handling and support play all coming together as Madero scored after the home side eventually ran out of defenders. The flyhalf’s conversion was good and the visitors had closed the gap to just five points.

Much of the pressure Griquas were under was a result of their own mistakes and they tightened up again significantly in the last quarter to seal the win.

Good driving play and ball-retention, followed by a swift attack down the left, resulted in a penalty, successfully converted by Vogt (26-18), but the fullback did miss a third shot at goal with three minutes remaining.

It did not matter though and the defending champions were left to rue their lack of technical precision and structure. The Pampas XV had played the more exciting rugby, but the more structured Griquas team were able to feed off their mistakes, always a crucial factor in knockout rugby.

Griquas, with an experienced tight five and highly capable loose trio, are not going to be easy to beat at home, which is where they will keep playing by virtue of them topping the North Section log.

The Pampas XV, although they had 12 of last year’s title-winning side back, have not been the same team as in 2011 and, for the sake of their Rugby Championship hopes, hopefully they will have better players in Argentina.

Griquas will now face the winners of the match between the Sharks XV and the Blue Bulls in Durban on Saturday in the semifinals.

Griquas snatch victory 0

Posted on April 24, 2012 by Ken

The GWK Griquas charged to the top of the Vodacom Cup North Section standings as the Leopards criminally wasted a 27-12 halftime lead to lose 42-40 at Profert Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday.

The towering presence of lock Ligtoring Landman loomed with great authority over the Leopards as he scored two tries including the 75th-minute effort that won the match for Griquas.

He also scored in the 32nd minute to bring Griquas back into the game after they had trailed 5-20 thanks to two early tries by the Leopards.

The home side had dominated the opening exchanges and could have led 6-0 after as many minutes but flyhalf Andre Pretorius missed two penalties. He made up for it though as he succeeded with his next seven shots at goal, as well as slotting a drop goal.

The former Springbok had a chance to snatch the spoils for the Leopards at the death, but he was wide with his 77th-minute drop goal attempt.

A seventh-minute penalty by Pretorius was followed by a try by fullback Hoffman Maritz and the conversion and a drop goal by the flyhalf as the Leopards raced into a 13-0 lead after 15 minutes.

But the home crowd knew Griquas, with top spot on the log up for grabs and coming off a defeat last weekend, would come back firing and flank Marnus Schoeman, who was never far from the ball, scored their opening try in the 18th minute.

Eighthman Henro Swart scored for the Leopards six minutes later and Pretorius converted to stretch the lead to 20-5.

Landman then scored his first try and Leopards wing Berty Visser replied and the home side went into the break 27-12 to the good.

But the second half brought a fierce comeback by Griquas. Outside centre Jean Stemmet’s elusive run led to a try two minutes after the break and his midfield partner PJ Vermeulen then scored three minutes later.

Pretorius stepped up to kick a 48th-minute penalty that stretched the Leopards’ lead to six points (30-24).

Griqualand West fullback Rudi Vogt kicked a 56th-minute penalty to make it 27-30, and astute flanker Jonathan Adendorf finally gave the visitors the lead with a try five minutes later.

The vastly-experienced Pretorius knows what pressure kicking is all about and he slotted a 65th-minute penalty to put the Leopards back in front 33-32, but they messed up from the kick-off and conceded a penalty to Vogt almost immediately.

But the Leopards were able to regain possession from the kick-off and they engineered a try to inside centre Adriaan Engelbrecht, which Pretorius converted.

But Griquas had the last say and the five log points they so desperately wanted as Landman dotted down to give them a two-point lead over the Pumas atop the North Section.

The Leopards picked up two bonus points to keep their hopes of making the quarterfinals alive, although they will have to win next weekend and hope the Lions and/or Bulls lose.

SCORERS:

Leopards – Tries: Hoffman Maritz, Henro Swart, Berty Visser, Adriaan Engelbrecht. Conversions: Andre Pretorius (4). Penalties: Pretorius (3). Drop goal: Pretorius.

GWK Griquas – Tries: Marnus Schoeman, Ligtoring Landman (2), Jean Stemmet, PJ Vermeulen, Jonathan Adendorf. Conversions: Rudi Vogt (3). Penalties: Vogt (2).

Galatians 5:25 – “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep walking in step with the Spirit.”

There is only one Christ and all things that are preached in his name must conform to his character. We can only know Christ’s character through an intimate and personal relationship with him.

How would Christ respond in situations in which you find yourself? Would he be underhanded? Would he be unforgiving and cause broken relationships?

“The value of your faith and the depth of your spiritual experience can only be measured by their practical application in your daily life. You can spend hours at mass crusades; have the ability to pray in public; quote endlessly from the Word; but if you have not had a personal encounter with the living Christ your outward acts count for nothing.” – Solly Ozrovech, A Shelter From The Storm
