The Ford Pumas used the rolling maul to great attacking effect as they hammered the Boland Cavaliers 33-10 (half-time 26-3) in their Absa Currie Cup First Division match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday.

The Cavaliers were at sixes and sevens trying to stop the powerful Pumas pack and it took just three minutes before flank Jaco Bouwer was at the back of a rolling maul to dot down for the opening try.

Flyhalf Carl Bezuidenhout converted for the home side, but his opposite number, Elgar Watts, brought Boland back within four points with a penalty in the eighth minute.

But the Pumas were in firm control by the end of the first quarter as Bezuidenhout used slick hands and quick feet to get in the gap and score their second try, followed soon afterwards by Bouwer once again dotting down in the maul.

Bezuidenhout converted both tries and the Pumas were 21-3 in front in 17 minutes.

Bouwer’s hat-trick try completed a hellish first half for the Cavaliers, the visitors going into the break 3-26 down.

Things would go better for the visitors in the second half as they made a host of substitutions, but Pumas captain and centre JW Jonker was able to go over in the 63rd minute to stretch the lead to 33-3 after Bezuidenhout’s conversion.

The Cavaliers were well and truly chasing the game in the final quarter and replacement centre Jonathan Francke sped over for their only try with 13 minutes remaining.

The Pumas, controversially relegated from the Premier Division, certainly made a bold statement as they go in chase of the title the Boland Cavaliers won last year.

The Ford Pumas were too strong at home for a disappointing EP Kings team as they won their Vodacom Cup quarterfinal 30-19 (half-time 17-9) at the impressive Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Friday.

The Pumas were full value for their win, with the Kings behind throughout the match and simply outmuscled and out-skilled by the home side, raising the spectre of serious problems in SuperRugby next year.

The Pumas team were physical, gutsy in defence and took their chances, their reward being just their second appearance in the Vodacom Cup semi-finals.

The Mpumalanga side made a great start as they pressured the EP Kings from the kickoff, leading to a poor clearance. They then rumbled a rolling maul to within sight of the tryline, earning a penalty, which they tapped, prop Ashley Buys then crashing over for the opening try from close range.

Fullback JC Roos, whose powerful boot played an important role in the victory, converted.

EP Kings flyhalf Justin van Staden kicked a good penalty in the seventh minute (3-7), but the Pumas played their way back into opposition territory. They showed their liking for phase play with four rucks set up going left and then another three going right, before wing Deon Scholtz went dashing down the touchline like a greyhound before passing inside for hooker Torsten van Jaarsveld to charge over the line.

Eight minutes later, flank Jaco Bouwer, one of the Pumas’ champions, went streaking through a gap in the Kings’ defences to score their third try and, with a 17-3 lead, the home side were well on their way to keeping their title hopes alive.

The Pumas defence was at times a little over-enthusiastic and Van Staden was able to kick penalties in the 23rd and 38th minutes to reduce the gap to 17-9 and keep the Kings in the game.

And, the Kings ended the half and began the second playing against 14 men after Pumas flank Renaldo Bothma high-tackled fullback SP Marais and was yellow-carded.

The one-man advantage gave the visitors the opportunity to score their only try, six minutes into the second half, when strong runs by eighthman Jacques Engelbrecht and lock Johan Snyman, and slick work by replacement scrumhalf Boela Abrahams, who gave the Kings some spark, provided Marais with the space to dot down.

Van Staden’s conversion made the score 16-20 and the Pumas had been given a little scare. They immediately upped their game and the pressure told on the Kings.

The ball was knocked-on inside the EP 22 by Marais after a risky pass from centre Scott van Breda and, from the scrum in the shadow of the posts, prop Corne Fourie, with the support of Bothma on his back, burst straight through the defences to score the match-winning try.

Roos added the Pumas’ remaining points with the conversion and a 70th-minute penalty, while Van Staden could only kick one of the three penalty attempts he was given in the second half.

The Ford Pumas stymied the MTN Golden Lions’ top-of-the-log ambitions and kept their own Vodacom Cup hopes alive as they beat their hosts 37-33 (half-time 17-20) at CocaCola Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Lions often looked the better team and seemed to be pulling away from the visitors when their second try gave them a 20-10 lead with just three minutes of the first half remaining. But the Lions must have really resented the plucky Pumas’ ability to bounce back and the men from Mpumalanga were quick to strike after kick-offs in particular.

The opening 10 minutes saw the Pumas and Lions score tit-for-tat tries with flank Jaco Bouwer scoring for the visitors after a fantastic rolling maul and lock Hendrik Roodt charging over for the Gautengers after a fine take at the back of the lineout by eighthman JJ Gagiano.

The tightly-contested tiff also featured excellent goal-kicking by Pumas fullback Coenie van Wyk, who succeeded with all seven of his shots at goal, and Lions flyhalf Guy Cronje, whose only miss from eight attempts came off the post and led to a Pumas try!

In the 14th minute, a powerful charge by flank Stephan de Wit put the Lions on the front foot, leading to a penalty by Cronje (10-7). A high tackle on the impressive De Wit five minutes later led to another Cronje penalty (13-7) and the Pumas, who had scored their seven points in the first five minutes, were finally back on the scoreboard with eight minutes left in the first half when the excellent direct running and support play of their forwards earned Van Wyk his first penalty (13-10).

The Lions were quick to put the Pumas back under pressure, however, their good ball-retention eventually leading to the defence cracking as fullback Garth April joined the line and centre Bradley Moolman was able to go over in the left corner. Cronje’s good day with the boot was highlighted by his conversion from the touchline (20-10).

But the Lions spent the halftime break mourning a costly lapse in concentration as they failed to gather the kick-off, Pumas wing Deon Scholtz grabbing the ball and scooting over for a crucial try just befpre the interval (20-17).

Having battled gamely in their bright pink strips in the first half, the Pumas switched to grey in the second half and they were a new side. Ever quick to pounce on an opportunity, they took the lead four minutes after the break when a Cronje penalty attempt came back off the post and centre Tiaan Marx’s pace caught the Lions unawares. The former Leopards and KZN representative sprinted all the way into the Lions’ 22, Scholtz was stopped just short of the line, but the home side could not keep hooker Torsten van Jaarsveld from crashing over.

But after a strong run by Moolman, Pumas scrumhalf Shaun Venter did not show the necessary restraint at the ruck and Cronje’s penalty closed the gap to just one point (23-24).

The Lions clawed their way back into the lead in the 55th minute courtesy of another Cronje penalty (26-24), but the Pumas pounced again, counter-attacking off an up-and-under and earning Van Wyk another penalty (27-26).

With 13 minutes remaining, and with options both left and right from a midfield scrum in Lions’ territory, lock Rudi Matthee, always strong with ball in hand, made impressive ground before Bouwer reached over the ruck to score.

Van Wyk’s conversion gave the Pumas a healthy 34-26 lead, but the visitors were soon singing a different tune as the Lions came swarming back on to attack.

Some out-of-sorts basics by the Pumas put them under pressure and wing Ruan Combrinck finned his way down the right touchline for a top-class try. Cronje’s conversion was a formality and it was a one-point game (33-34) heading into the last 10 minutes.

But the Pumas once again showed that remarkable ability to strike back from the kick-off as they roared back into the Lions’ 22 and Van Wyk kicked a penalty that was enough of a buffer.

Some admirable defence in the last five minutes ensured that the Pumas’ victory was just that little bit more memorable.

The Griffons were overpowered up front and had little hope against a Ford Pumas side that hammered them 43-12 (half-time 22-5) in their Vodacom Cup match in Welkom on Friday.

With their scrum being shoved backwards and their lineout not functioning, the Griffons were playing on a wing and a prayer, and, with such tremendous first-phase ball, the Pumas were able to breach their defences with ease, running in six tries.

Flank Jaco Bouwer scored two tries and revelled in the wonderful platform laid by his tight five, while flyhalf JC Roos collected 13 points via five conversions and a penalty.

That penalty came in the sixth minute and opened the scoring in the North Section encounter. But a storm then approached the North-West Stadium and referee Archie Sehlako took the players off the field due to lightning danger and play was interrupted for 20 minutes.

Upon their return, it took a while for the Pumas to regain their momentum, but the educated boot of fullback Coenie van Wyk set up the first try in the 25th minute. Van Wyk’s chip was perfectly placed for wing Wilhelm Loock, who returned the favour by passing back to Van Wyk to score with the tryline in front of them.

Roos converted and the Pumas led 10-0.

The one aspect of the Griffons’ play that the Pumas never really learnt to handle were the bullocking runs of stocky centre Japie Nel in midfield and, as he kept the visitors’ defence busy trying to bring him down, eighthman Nicky Steyn was on his shoulder to take the try-scoring pass (10-5).

But the Pumas were quickly back in Griffons’ territory and wing Deon Scholtz dashed over for a try as the home side’s defence napped after a penalty was awarded against them.

As half-time approached, the Pumas pack kept driving forward and the inspirational Bouwer was the one to dot down, with Roos converting. Thunder could still be heard in the distance, but the Griffons’ players’ ears were full of the ominous sound of an approaching hiding as the visitors went into the break 22-5 up.

Referee Sehlako had to order uncontested scrums shortly after half-time as the Griffons had no more props left, which gave the home side some respite. But Sehlako was still firm in policing the outmatched hosts, yellow carding replacement scrumhalf Tertius Carse and, towards the end of the match, red-carding fullback Tertius Maarman, who had moved to halfback, for stamping.

The second half sprung to life in the last 10 minutes, with Bouwer scoring his second try on the back of the Pumas’ forward dominance, with Roos kicking the extra two points (29-5).

The Pumas did pay the penalty for again not stopping Nel in the danger area as another blazing run by the powerhouse centre set up Steyn for his second try, but the final say would be the Pumas’ as Loock, who showed great passion and pace, and captain and centre JW Jonker crossed for tries.

The other Pumas player to shine was scrumhalf Shaun Venter, who maintained a cracking pace in terms of his distribution and linking play between forwards and backs.

With the odds so heavily stacked against him, Steyn led the Griffons pack with aplomb, performing miraculous deeds from the back of the scrum as he parted the Pumas defence on a number of occasions.
