Tremendous Birch & Abbott turn Series into 3-horse race 0

Posted on May 02, 2013 by Ken

Tremendous eight-wicket hauls by Andrew Birch and Kyle Abbott turned the four-day domestic franchise series into a three-horse race on Saturday as the Dolphins upset the log-leading Cape Cobras and the Warriors thrashed the Knights in Bloemfontein.

Abbott produced a classy display of match-winning fast bowling as he led the Dolphins to a thrilling 15-run victory over the Cobras at Newlands.

The Cobras were chasing a tricky target of 183 to stretch their lead at the top of the log, but Abbott’s magnificent eight for 45 in 18 overs saw them bowled out for 167, keeping the Warriors and Highveld Lions firmly in contention for four-day honours.

Abbott had Andrew Puttick caught behind for four in his opening five-over spell and he returned six overs later to have Justin Ontong caught off a mistimed pull for 25.

He then struck twice in his eighth over to dramatically undermine the Cobras’ run-chase and reduce them to 82 for five.

Stiaan van Zyl cruised to 40 off 37 balls, but he then also mistimed a pull and looped a catch to mid-on.

Abbott then went full and trapped Dane Vilas lbw for a two-ball duck.

Justin Kemp revived the Cobras’ hopes with 29 off 31 balls, but he was not able to finish the job as he shouldered arms to Abbott after lunch and was bowled as the competition’s leading wicket-taker jagged a delivery back into the right-hander.

The Cobras were not giving up without a fight, however, and Johann Louw

(16) and Dane Piedt (20) chipped away at the target.

But Calvin Savage removed Louw before Abbott returned after a short rest and was too good for Piedt, trapping him lbw and then having Beuran Hendricks (4) caught behind, Daryn Smit taking a sharp catch.

Abbott finished with superb match figures of 12 for 96 and, as far as the Cobras are concerned, their once considerable lead atop the standings has now been whittled down to just 0.18 points over the Warriors.

Third place is filled by the Lions, who are currently 14 points behind and are being frustrated by the rain in Johannesburg as their bowlers look to enforce the follow-on against the Titans.

An amazing bowling performance by Birch led the Warriors to a crushing 10-wicket victory over the Knights.

The Knights batsmen could not fathom the late swing Birch obtained in cloudy conditions, crashing to 106 all out in their second innings, leaving the Warriors with a target of just 94 to win.

Birch finished with career-best figures of eight for 30 as he claimed four of the five wickets to fall on Saturday morning after the Knights had resumed on 76 for five.

He struck for the first time in his second over of the day, having Patrick Botha (18) caught behind by Adrian McLaren to break a stubborn sixth-wicket stand of 33 with Dean Elgar.

Elgar top-scored for the Knights with 34 before he was also caught behind off Birch four overs later.

Birch then wrapped up the Knights tail for the addition of just 20 more runs as the home side completed a dismal second-innings effort that lasted just 32.1 overs.

Quickfire innings of 48 not out by Michael Price and 44 not out by Davey Jacobs saw the Warriors go to victory in just 13.3 overs.

In Johannesburg, the aggressive Lions pace attack reduced the Titans to

115 for eight, still 188 runs behind, in the 41.2 overs of play that were possible before rain washed out play.

With the Lions attack swinging the ball and getting good bounce from the Wanderers pitch, there was little resistance from the Titans batsmen, with 20s from openers Jacques Rudolph and Pieter Malan, and Heino Kuhn the leading contributions.

That trio and David Wiese (14) were all caught behind the wicket, the Lions catching everything that came their way.

Chris Morris bowled with unrelenting pace and accuracy, but it was swing bowlers Cliffe Deacon and Zander de Bruyn who emerged as the biggest threats.

Deacon ended the day as the leading wicket-taker with three for 25 in

11 overs, as well as a great catch at second slip to dismiss Malan, while De Bruyn had two for 30.

Another embarrassing batting effort by the Titans has left them needing

39 runs to avoid the follow-on as play enters its final day.

The heavy rain around Gauteng limited play on the second day to just two deliveries and the umpires stopped play on the third day at 4pm.

Amazing Birch crushes Knights 0

An amazing bowling performance by Andrew Birch led the Warriors to a crushing 10-wicket victory over the Knights on the third day of their four-day domestic franchise series match in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The Knights batsmen could not fathom the late swing Birch obtained in cloudy conditions, crashing to 106 all out in their second innings, leaving the Warriors with a target of just 94 to win the match.

Elgar, fresh off his maiden Test century last weekend, top-scored for the Knights with 34 before he was also caught behind off Birch four overs later.

Birch then wrapped up the Knights tail for the addition of just 20 more runs as the home side completed a dismal second-innings effort that lasted just 32.1 overs.

Quickfire innings of 48 not out by Michael Price and 44 not out by Davey Jacobs would then see the Warriors go to victory in just 13.3 overs without the loss of a wicket.

The Warriors earned 17.62 bonus points to go to 92 points overall, just 0.18 points behind the log-leading Cape Cobras.

Lions put away Cheetahs & regain top spot 0

The MTN Golden Lions regained first place on the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division log as they put away the Toyota Free State Cheetahs 38-23 (half-time 20-16) in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The Cheetahs weathered an early storm from the Lions to actually lead 16-13 after half-an-hour, but the Lions scored two tries in three minutes either side of half time to give the Gautengers a 27-16 lead and thereafter there was nothing that could rescue the Free Staters from a fourth defeat in six matches.

Flyhalf Elton Jantjies instituted some early control for the Lions as his short kick-off caught the Cheetahs napping, was claimed by flank Willie Britz and led to a penalty which Jantjies kicked, followed by another penalty in the sixth minute.

The one area where the Lions did struggle was at the breakdown and referee Sindile Mayende set the tone with an early call against fetcher Cobus Grobbelaar, allowing Cheetahs wing Nico Scheepers to kick a penalty (3-6).

The Cheetahs had a much bigger problem, however, and that was their insistence on trying to run their surfeit of possession in their own territory and the mistakes that came as they tried to run under pressure was what eventually brought them to their knees.

It was the cause of the Lions’ first try as flyhalf Tewis de Bruyn swung the ball from inside his own 22, but his intentions were beautifully read by Lions lock Franco van der Merwe, who put himself between the pivot and the midfield receivers and claimed an easy intercept try.

De Bruyn will probably claim he did not see Van der Merwe lurking because both teams were playing in predominantly white jerseys, with the Cheetahs changing to orange four minutes later, but the pass should never have been given in the first place.

SLICK WORK

When the Cheetahs did rumble upfield and keep the ball going forward via their pack, they were rewarded with prop Marcel van der Merwe summoning the power to bash through for a try.

Scheepers converted and then the Lions’ breakdown problems proved a real spoke in their wheel as the Cheetahs sharpshooter was presented with two more kicks at goal to put Free State 16-13 ahead.

But Janjties was just the man to provide the spark and a vital try for the Lions just before half-time as his lovely inside pass to Ruan Combrinck allowed the wing to burst through the first line of defence and his beautiful swerve outside then took him past the cover defence and over the tryline.

The Cheetahs had barely settled down for the second half when centre Lionel Mapoe, another of the Lions’ outstanding players, stood up the defence with wonderful footwork and laid a try on a plate for wing Deon Helberg.

The Lions suffered a blow in the 49th minute when Van der Merwe was sent to spend 10 minutes in front of the grandstand after failing to keep on his feet in the ruck, but the visitors defended superbly and did not concede a point while he was gone, despite the Cheetahs battering away at their line for 19 phases at one stage.

The siege was lifted in the 59th minute as Jantjies and Mapoe once again produced slick work in the backline and hooker Callie Visagie put in a big charge forward and earned a penalty. Jantjies slotted his sixth successive successful kick at goal and then nailed an effort from just inside the Free State half and the Lions were cruising with a 33-16 lead.

The Cheetahs narrowed the gap with 10 minutes remaining as Van der Merwe grabbed his second try, but the Lions were the last to celebrate as they used the width of the field and great work by flank Cobus Grobbelaar allowed Combrinck the space on the outside to score his second try.

The win took the Lions to 20 points on the log, which will see them go into next weekend’s seventh round on top of the standings unless Western Province manage to score a bonus-point win over the Sharks.

It should be the last game the Lions play for a while with Jantjies because if he does not get a call-up to the Springbok squad, given his brilliant all-round form and the calamitous display by Morne Steyn in Dunedin, there is probably going to be a riot.

SCORERS

MTN GOLDEN LIONS – Tries: Franco van der Merwe, Ruan Combrinck (2), Deon Helberg. Conversions: Elton Jantjies (3). Penalties: Jantjies (4).

Highlanders reserves snatch dramatic victory 0

Posted on April 30, 2012 by Ken

Flyhalf Chris Noakes scored 17 points in 20 minutes as the Otago Highlanders’ replacement players snatched a dramatic 36-33 (half-time 9-23) victory over the Free State Cheetahs in their SuperRugby match in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Noakes, who replaced regular flyhalf Mike Delany midway through the second half, scored a try and kicked three conversions and three penalties, including an angled, long-distance match-winning effort in the 79th minute.

The Highlanders rebounded from a 9-30 deficit and the yellow-carding of hooker Andrew Hore and flank James Haskell to record their seventh win in nine matches and stay five points behind leaders and New Zealand Conference pace-setters, the Waikato Chiefs.

The Cheetahs seemed to have the match sown up when flyhalf Johan Goosen, rapidly becoming one of the legends of Free State rugby, scored a jinking try from 70 metres out to stretch their lead to 28-9. But the 19-year-old injured his shoulder in the process of scoring the try and had to leave the field, the Cheetahs suffering a spectacular meltdown thereafter.

The Highlanders began throwing the ball around and attacked like a Sevens side and were rewarded with three tries in six minutes, two by replacement scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan, as they ripped the stunned Cheetahs apart.

The home side had used strong driving play and the boot of Goosen to put themselves in a powerful position through tries by prop Coenie Oosthuizen and lock Andries Ferreira, as well as Goosen’s fine solo effort early in the second half.

Goosen was replaced by Sias Ebersohn, who missed three penalties, including an easy effort from in line with the right upright that could have made his team the victors.

Scorers

Cheetahs – Tries: Coenie Oosthuizen, Andries Ferreira, Johan Goosen. Conversions: Goosen (2), Sias Ebersohn. Penalties: Goosen (3), Ebersohn.

Highlanders – Tries: Chris Noakes, Jimmy Cowan (2). Conversions: Noakes (3). Penalties: Mike Delany (3), Noakes (2).

Revelation 3:15 – “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other.”

How can you expect blessings without obeying?

How can you expect the presence of God without spending time quietly before him?

Be sincere in your commitment to Him; be willing to sacrifice time so that you can grow spiritually; be disciplined in prayer and Bible study; worship God in spirit and truth.

Have you totally surrendered to God? Have you cheerfully given him everything you are and everything you have?

If you love Christ, accept the challenges of that love: Placing Christ in the centre of your life means complete surrender to Him.
