Cricket fans in Kimberley can look forward to watching live cricket next week 0

Posted on November 08, 2021 by Ken

Cricket-lovers in Kimberley can look forward to being the first spectators to resume watching live cricket at the ground, with CSA confirming that they are finalising plans to have a crowd in attendance for the first time since the Covid virus spread uncontrollably through the country 19 months ago at next week’s T20 Provincial Knockout Cup.

With government having now given permission for up to 2000 spectators to be allowed as long as all Covid procedures and precautions are followed, cricket is likely to be the second sport to open its doors, after 2000 vaccinated fans were able to watch Bafana Bafana beat Ethiopia 1-0 in their World Cup qualifier earlier this week in Soweto.

The CSA T20 Provincial Knockout Cup resumes with the quarterfinals on Tuesday at the Diamond Oval.

“Chances are that we will have our first set of spectators for the finals,” a CSA spokesperson confirmed to The Citizen on Wednesday evening. “We are finalising the logistics and we should be making an announcement soon.”

Tuesday’s action sees South-Western Districts take on the Northerns Titans, and then the Free State Knights, who used to have Kimberley as one of their home venues, play Western Province. KZN Dolphins versus Eastern Province Warriors and Boland Rocks against North-West Dragons are the other quarterfinals, both to be played on Wednesday.

The semi-finals will then take place on Thursday and then the final will be held on Friday.

SA Rugby announced earlier on Wednesday that fully vaccinated supporters will be allowed to attend both club and professional matches from now on. But the four franchises are all overseas playing in the United Rugby Championship and the first senior professional rugby match to be open to spectators is likely to be on November 6 at Loftus Versfeld when the Carling Champion XV take on Kenya.

Bulls lose Goosen, but lifted by welcoming back player responsible for beating British & Irish Lions 0

The Bulls have lost a leader in Johan Goosen, but captain Marcell Coetzee said on Tuesday that welcoming the player responsible for the Springboks winning the series against the British and Irish Lions back into the squad can only lift the team as they look to finish their first overseas campaign in the United Rugby Championship on a high against Edinburgh on Saturday.

Morne Steyn arrived in Edinburgh on Tuesday, via an overnight flight from Frankfurt, with the Bulls confirming that flyhalf Goosen was headed in the opposite direction, flying back to South Africa to have scans on the knee he injured in last weekend’s momentous win over the Cardiff Blues.

“Johan is a real character and a good leader in the team, and we are bleeding for him,” Coetzee said. “But now we have Morne here, who won the British and Irish Lions series, he has fantastic experience that you just can’t buy.

“It’s going to be awesome to have him with us this week, what a character he is and a legend of Bulls rugby. He is consistent in all he does and I’m sure he’s going to bring energy and enthusiasm that will lift the team.

“Chris Smith also showed his character and resilience when he replaced Johan, I thought he had an excellent game and he carried that flyhalf mantle really well,” the Springbok loose forward added.

Last weekend’s impressive comeback win against Cardiff was vital for the Bulls after they started the competition with chastening defeats against Leinster and Connacht. It’s their last week on a tough tour to a brand new environment, but Coetzee said the Currie Cup champions are hungry for another win this weekend.

“The mood is a bit more positive now after the win, but we want to be consistent. There’s definitely some new energy, we know it’s our last week on tour and there’s plenty to play for.

“We want that same mindset as in the second half against Cardiff when we gave it everything and the passion and character of the team came out.

“We just want a successful end for the tour, having come into a whole new tournament not knowing what to expect. We are still quite a young group, but we are growing by the day.

“Hopefully things are right now and we must make sure we don’t take a step backwards this weekend. Our performance on Saturday will say a lot about how we have grown as a group and how strong our culture is,” Coetzee said.

Greene’s 1st title takes all of his composure & skill in Humewood gale 0

GQEBERHA, Eastern Cape – Daniel Greene secured his first Sunshine Tour title in his 12th season on tour at the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series Humewood event on Saturday and it took all of his composure and skill to secure the playoff win over Tristen Strydom as it was blowing a gale on the links course.

Greene completed a solid par on the first playoff hole, on the par-four 18th, while Strydom could only get a bogey after he hit his second shot well right of the green. It was a bitter blow for the 24-year-old who was also chasing his first victory on tour, Strydom missing a shortish putt for par on the last hole of regulation play.

Making the turn on two-under for his round, Greene then did exceptionally well to come home in level-par as the players faced the worst of the wind. The 36-year-old was helped by a crucial eagle on the par-five 11th.

When Strydom bogeyed the 17th it meant they were all-square going up the last and Strydom wasted a golden opportunity to win as he was lying just off the green and decided to chip his third instead of putting.

Steve Surry, Christiaan Basson and Malcolm Mitchell, who blazed through the last nine holes in four-under-par to finish with a level-par 72, all finished just one stroke off the lead on four-under-par, proving that the leaders cannot take anything for granted when conditions were as tough as they were at Humewood on Saturday.

But Greene, who has a strong record in Vodacom events on the coast, showed he could adapt and remain unflustered despite how testing the situation was.

Leinster score 17pts in 1st 13mins v Bulls & show why they are No.1 in Europe 0

Posted on October 19, 2021 by Ken

Leinster gave an emphatic demonstration of why they are considered by many to be the No.1 side in Europe as they scored 17 points in the first 13 minutes and went on to demolish South Africa’s top team, the Bulls, 31-3 in the opening round of the United Rugby Championship in Dublin on Saturday.

It was not even the Bulls’ first experience of European rugby as they travelled to Treviso for the Rainbow Cup final in June. They got hammered that day and they weren’t competitive on Saturday either. Especially after a nightmare first quarter in which they conceded two tries.

It was one mistake after the other from the start as flyhalf Johan Goosen sent the kickoff straight into touch and the Bulls were then penalised at the resulting scrum. Jonathan Sexton set the lineout and then knocked over the penalty that resulted from that to give Leinster an early lead.

Three minutes later, a good dart by former Kiwi wing James Lowe put Leinster on attack and a superb run by flank George van der Flier brought the first try.

The second try came six minutes later as the Bulls won a lineout – which did not happen as often as it should have – but there was no halfback to take the tap-down. Leinster claimed the ball and a little dink over the top was regathered before the brilliant outside centre Garry Ringrose fed Andrew Porter, a Bulls defence in disarray allowing the prop to cross an open tryline.

The Bulls showed good tenacity to stay in the contest after such a torrid start, and they produced some excellent rugby. But they lacked the polish and clinical efficiency of their opponents, who just did everything quicker and better than they did. There as a noticeable gap in skills under pressure, especially at the breakdown, where Leinster went hard and pounced on every little inaccuracy.

The Bulls wasted two excellent try-scoring opportunities in the second quarter. But the brilliant Van der Flier stripped Cornal Hendricks of the ball on the tryline after great work by wing Madosh Tambwe, who had a fine game. Goosen was at least able to kick a penalty, but then the Bulls were pressing hard when the ball was just left unguarded next to the line and Leinster pounced and were able to clear their lines.

Leinster, with classy flyhalf Sexton pulling the strings, varied their game in impressive fashion and, in the second half, replacement hooker James Tracy scored from a lineout maul. The Irish powerhouses then completed the scoring with an excellent try to Sexton’s replacement Ross Byrne that showcased their superb support play, offloading skills and use of space.

Scorers

Leinster – Tries: George van der Flier, Andrew Porter, James Tracy, Ross Byrne. Conversions: Jonathan Sexton (3), Byrne. Penalty: Sexton.

Bulls – Penalty: Johan Goosen.

Colossians 3:13-14 – “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have; forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together.”

“When the Holy Spirit lives in you, you reflect the qualities of Christ in your life. Love and courtesy are basic characteristics of the Christian life. … If Chris lives in you, you will be kind and patient toward others.

“A person who is truly courteous is humble, … His attitude is the same regardless of whether he is talking to kings or beggars. He treats everyone alike, no matter what race, colour or creed they are. He rejoices in making the path through life easier for others to travel.
