Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers were once again earning themselves gold stars as they steadied South Africa after the loss of three wickets without a run being scored, taking the hosts to 102 for three at lunch on the first day of the first Test against the West Indies at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday.

Amla and De Villiers came together after an amazing collapse saw South Africa slump from 57 without loss to 57 for three, a previously-toothless West Indian attack suddenly taking wickets in three successive overs.

It was an extraordinary turnaround given how poorly the visitors had bowled in the first hour, producing assorted lengths and lines as openers Alviro Petersen and Dean Elgar brought up their 50 partnership in just the 10th over.

Petersen was the first to go, getting a start but only making 27 before he pushed at a regulation shortish delivery from Kemar Roach and edged it to first slip.

Just seven balls later, Elgar edged a loose drive at a short, wide delivery from Sheldon Cottrell and was caught by Marlon Samuels in the gully for 28.

It was not smart batting by the South African openers, letting an ill-disciplined West Indies side back into the game and worse was to follow another seven balls later when Faf du Plessis fell for a duck.

Du Plessis just couldn’t resist sparring at a fine delivery from Roach that just shaped away a bit and bounced more than expected, the edge safely taken by wicketkeeper and captain Denesh Ramdin.

South Africa were shaky at 57 for three after being sent in to bat, but Amla and De Villiers are both well-versed in saving the Proteas.

Amla swiped three fours through the off-side off Jerome Taylor on his way to 25 not out, while De Villiers played himself in, playing straight and reaching 16 not out at the interval.

Their partnership is currently worth 45 and, with debutant Stiaan van Zyl and young Quinton de Kock next to bat, South Africa’s hopes of a good total probably rest on their two best batsmen putting together a sizeable partnership.

Roach was the pick of the West Indian bowlers, featuring twice on the scorecard as he claimed two for 16 in six tidy overs.

The Unlimited Titans’ opponents in the Global Softech Sixes Franchise Challenge next week will have to face the twin threats of both Albie Morkel and David Wiese, two of the longest hitters in the country, after the pair of all-rounders were named yesterday in the hosts’ squad for the inaugural event.

Roelof van der Merwe, Henry Davids and Farhaan Behardien provide only a marginally more veiled threat as the Titans take on the other franchises on September 4 and 5 at SuperSport Park.

Big hitters will certainly be calling the tune in the event, for which the boundaries will be brought in, allowing corporate hospitality to encroach on to the field, with Justin Kemp, Richard Levi, Dwaine Pretorius, Chris Morris, Dillon du Preez, Cameron Delport and Robbie Frylinck all named in their respective franchise squads.

The national team is away that weekend, probably playing in the final of the triangular series in Zimbabwe, but there is enough bludgeoning power on hand to ensure spectators at the Global Softech Sixes have an entertaining time.

Bowlers will be under threat, but the Titans squad is blessed in this department with everyone, except wicketkeeper/batsman Mangaliso Mosehle, being an all-rounder of some sort and Van der Merwe, Wiese, Morkel and Davids are all established limited-overs practitioners.

The Franchise Challenge is to be followed by the Africa Sixes Challenge on September 6, featuring South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The brilliant seam bowling of Corbin Bosch proved too much for the batsmen of Leeds Bradford MCCU, as Assupol Tuks brushed aside the hosts by seven wickets with 22 balls to spare on the second day of the Red Bull Campus Cricket Finals in London on Tuesday.

Bosch struck with the new ball in the second and fourth overs to immediately undermine the Leeds Bradford innings after they had won the toss and elected to bat first, and he claimed further wickets in the 18th and 20^th overs as the English students battled to 109 for eight in their 20 overs.

The final result was then obvious as soon as Aiden Markram made a brisk start at the top of the Tuks batting line-up, the SA U19 captain stroking a run-a-ball 42 as the University of Pretoria sealed victory in the 17^th over.

Tuks have now ensured their place in Saturday’s semi-finals of the T20 Varsity World Cup, regardless of what happens in their final round-robin fixture against the Jamaica Inter-Collegiate Sports Association on Wednesday.

It was a second successive convincing victory for the Pretoria students after the Theunis de Bruyn-inspired thrashing of Bangladesh’s University of the Liberal Arts on the first day.

The hero yesterday was Bosch, with four for 27 in his four overs. One of the stars of the SA U19 team that won the ICC Junior World Cup earlier this year, Bosch has not yet played first-class cricket, but he is almost certain to appear for Northerns in the summer.

The son of former Test fast bowler Tertius is also wonderfully skilful at the death and he was superbly supported by his opening partner, Vincent Moore, who conceded just 12 runs in his four overs.

Off-spinner Ruben Claassen was the other class act for Tuks, taking two for 13 in four overs.

The runs have kept flowing for Markram since the Junior World Cup triumph where he was the man of the tournament, and he anchored the straightforward Tuks chase with Gerry Pike and De Bruyn both adding 20s.

Jamaica Inter-Collegiate Sports Association will qualify for the semi-finals alongside Tuks if they win on Wednesday, but if the South Africans make it a clean sweep of three from three in Group 2 then they will be joined by whoever has the better run-rate between the West Indians and the winner of the other clash between the Bangladeshis and English.

Tuks beat Leeds Bradford by seven wickets with 22 balls remaining to ensure their place in Saturday’s semi-finals of the T20 Varsity World Cup.
