The British and Irish Lions will be coming to Loftus Versfeld after all and they have invited the Sharks to once again be their opposition in a hastily-arranged match that will take place on Saturday.

The Lions were originally scheduled to play the Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday, but that game has been postponed due to positive Covid tests in the Bulls camp.

But just as the Springboks, who have had their second Test against Georgia cancelled, are concerned about lack of game time ahead of the Test series against the Lions, so too are the tourists desperate not to miss out on any matches on their roster. Coach Warren Gatland would have carefully planned out giving his whole squad certain opportunities ahead of the first match against South Africa on July 24, and games not being played would throw all of that out of kilter.

The Sharks, who were hammered 54-7 by the Lions at Ellis Park on Wednesday night, were still in Gauteng on Thursday and have agreed to stay on the Highveld and play the tourists again. This will necessitate the postponement of their scheduled Currie Cup match on Saturday, against the Gauteng Lions at Kings Park, and SA Rugby are expected to communicate these details later on Thursday.

There had been speculation that the European Lions would want to get down to Cape Town, where they are meant to play SA A on Wednesday, as soon as possible to escape the epicentre of Covid in Gauteng. But their desperation to not lose out on game time has won the day.

And the Sharks have 36 players in Johannesburg, ready and willing to play. And hopefully second time around they will be better up to speed and able to provide more stern competition for the Lions.

The spotlight is once again on the Springboks’ Covid protocols and the amount of lux shining on them will only be higher this time as Lood de Jager has now returned a positive Covid test, causing the team’s training on Monday to be cancelled and the entire squad returning to isolation.

SA rugby issued a statement on Monday confirming that lock De Jager, who is currently rehabilitating from a broken tibia, had tested positive and had had close contact with several members of the squad, leading to the complete shutdown of activities, pending the results of further PCR testing and a review by the Medical Advisory Group.

Monday’s positive test follows three players suffering the same fate the previous weekend. One of those tests – that of scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies – was later shown to be a false positive and he played off the bench in the first Test against Georgia, but Vincent Koch and S’bu Nkosi both had to go into quarantine and close contacts such as Lukhanyo Am and Makazole Mapimpi were ruled out of last weekend’s match.

But on that occasion the Springboks were able to resume training on the Monday afternoon.

De Jager is one of the overseas-based players and was meant to be making progress in his rehabilitation to the extent that the management expected him to return to full training soon.

The desperately unfortunate 28-year-old will now have to be kept apart from the team he has worked so hard to rejoin.

The Springboks are meant to be playing the second Test against Georgia on Friday night, with the series against the British and Irish Lions starting on July 24.

The Bulls will once again be led by Nizaam Carr from eighthman and coach Jake White said he is excited by the attacking possibilities of the “athletic” team he has chosen to open their Rainbow Cup campaign against the Lions at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The Lions have traditionally enjoyed moving the ball wide and White on Friday announced a team to ensure that they are not stretched to breaking by their Gauteng rivals on Saturday.

“Obviously guys like Duane Vermeulen and Trevor Nyakane are not available because they are having their one-week off as requested by the Springboks, and Stedman Gans has joined the Sevens camp, but it’s quite an athletic team we’ve chosen. Prop Gerhard Steenekamp was an eighthman at school, Johan Grobbelaar and Mornay Smith are both mobile, we have two ligther locks together [Ruan Nortje & Janko Swanepoel] and Nizaam Carr is at eight.

“There are good athletes in this side and ball-players, and hopefully the sun comes out on Saturday and it’s dry. If we play the way we can, then we can keep the ball alive for long periods and get some nice attacking rugby going,” White said on Friday.

The well-travelled coach said he was disappointed that the Rainbow Cup would no longer have an overseas component, but that another double round of local derbies will allow him to work more on his combinations for later in the year.

“It’s disappointing for me that we won’t be going to Europe because I wold like to see different opposition. But one year ago we weren’t playing rugby at all, so let’s rather play each other again than nothing at all. It’s not first prize but at least we are playing rugby. We want to keep winning and keep our momentum going, keep growing as a team.

“We have three Springboks on the bench this weekend because I want to challenge the players and it’s nice to see other combinations. From our perspective it would get a bit boring just to play the same old guys over and over, and when we lose players to the Springboks or we’re playing in the rain, we need to see what combinations are suitable,” White said.

Quality spin bowling once again served as South Africa’s bete noir in the first T20 against Pakistan in Lahore on Thursday night as the Proteas fell three runs short of their target of 170.

That was in the main due to a thrilling spell of leg-spin trickery from Usman Qadir, son of the great Abdul, who took two for 21 in his four overs. But he was well-supported by left-armer Mohammad Nawaz, who also conceded just 21 runs in his four-over quota. With Khushdil Shah’s single over costing just six runs, it meant the spinners bowled nine overs for just 48 runs in the South African innings.

Qadir came into the attack after the Proteas had made a great start in the powerplay, reaching 51 without loss in the first six overs, mostly due to Janneman Malan’s pugnacious 44 off 29 balls. The 27-year-old leggie took just five balls to strike though as he bowled Malan with a superb delivery that drifted in and then turned sharply to hit off-stump.

Debutant Jacques Snyman was also bowled and put out of his misery by Qadir after scoring just two off six deliveries.

Malan’s opening partner Reeza Hendricks served as the anchor of the innings, as he fought his way to 54 off 42 deliveries, which was a welcome return to form since the Imperial Lions batsman has only scored 62 runs in his last seven innings.

But the seam bowlers returned and took care of David Miller (6), Heinrich Klaasen (12) and Andile Phehlukwayo (14), and Hendricks was run out in the 18^th over. Dwaine Pretorius (15* off 6) and Bjorn Fortuin (17* off 9) added an unbeaten 27 but were left needing six off the last ball to win, with Fortuin only able to dig a fine delivery in the blockhole  from Faheem Ashraf to the square-leg boundary for two.

South Africa had earlier been brutalised again by the bat of Mohammad Rizwan, who followed up his superb century in the final Test by stroking a superbly-paced 104 not out off just 64 balls, becoming only the second wicketkeeper after New Zealand great Brendon McCullum to score a hundred in all three formats.

Having been sent in to bat by the Proteas, Pakistan posted 169 for six, recovering from a shaky start after kingpin Babar Azam was run out first ball by a brilliant piece of fielding off his own bowling by Fortuin, and Hussain Talat (15) was given out stumped off Tabraiz Shamsi by the TV umpire when he had clearly got his foot back down in time.

No-one else scored more than Haider Ali’s hard-hit 21, but Rizwan just kept going and by the end of his innings was hitting the ball as well as anyone, hammering seven sixes and six fours.

Wrist-spinner Shamsi was the pick of the South African bowlers with one for 20 in his four overs, but Phehlukwayo bowled decently to take two for 33 and Fortuin, Pretorius and Lutho Sipamla also bowled tidily.
