Australia’s attack spares nobody when they get on a roll and they bundled South Africa out for just 152 before tea on the first day of the first Test at the Gabba in Brisbane on Saturday.

Apart from Kyle Verreynne’s determined 64 and a dogged 38 from Temba Bavuma, there were precious few other contributions of note from a South African batting line-up that looked all at sea on a green Gabba pitch that provided seam and spin.

Winning the toss and sending the Proteas in to bat, the Australian bowlers were wayward for the first few overs, but once they tightened up, the wickets began to tumble, South Africa crashing to 27 for four.

Captain Dean Elgar (3) was the first to fall, caught down the leg-side, sparring at a lifter from left-arm quick Mitchell Starc.

Five overs later, a flatfooted Rassie van der Dussen (5) provided a second catch for wicketkeeper Alex Carey, edging an excellent delivery from Pat Cummins (12.2-3-35-2) that was just outside off-stump.

Further disaster followed for South Africa as Sarel Erwee (10) and Khaya Zondo (0) also fell with the score on 27, three wickets going down on that score in the space of two overs.

Erwee went for an ambitious drive against Scott Boland (11-2-28-2), but edged to gully where Cameron Green took a sharp, low catch. The 33-year-old Boland has the penchant for taking wickets in clusters and two balls later he nipped the ball back into Zondo, who was playing from the crease, trapping him lbw.

But Verreynne and Bavuma spared the Proteas from complete humiliation as they put together a partnership of 98 for the fifth wicket in tenacious fashion.

Wicketkeeper Verreynne showed his temperament as he counter-attacked, striking eight fours and a six as he passed 50 for the second time in his 12 Tests; Bavuma was less flashy but did stud his innings with a couple of dazzling off-side boundaries.

Starc (14-1-41-3) made the breakthrough though when he used in-swing from over the wicket to find Bavuma’s inside-edge, from where the ball went on to the stumps.

From 125 for five, South Africa could only add another 27 runs as off-spinner Nathan Lyon (8-2-14-3) gained appreciable turn but also showed that bounce is one of his most valuable accessories as he ripped through the rest of the batting line-up.

Verreynne’s innings came to an end when he hung back in the crease, prodding at Lyon, and edged a catch to slip.

There was a twist last weekend on the old joke about where do the Sharks team stay when they play Free State in Bloemfontein (Answer: With their family) when the Cheetahs visited Durban for a friendly match, but the goal was very serious – making sure they are ready to fire when they return to United Rugby Championship action against the Cardiff Blues at Kings Park on Sunday.

The Sharks last played on October 30 in a disappointing defeat to the Bulls in Pretoria, which leaves them eighth on the log, so it is important they hit the ground running and maintain their five-match unbeaten home run against a tough and highly capable Cardiff team.

“Three weeks off without being in a game situation would maybe have caused us to be rusty this weekend, but fortunately we were able to organise a friendly against the Cheetahs,” director of rugby Neil Powell explained on Friday.

“It was a very good exercise, playing three halves of 30 minutes each, with full-out contact. A guy like Lionel Cronje, who could move into flyhalf on Sunday, was able to get some game-time, as did other guys who have not played a lot.

“Hopefully that means we have more flow and momentum on Sunday and we have to make sure we are up and ready against a really good, quality Cardiff team, who are defensively very strong and have lots of experience.

“We will have to make sure we manage our game well and are very disciplined, because Cardiff score the majority of their tries from the lineout and maul and we can’t be giving penalties away,” Powell said.

The new head honcho at Kings Park acknowledged that the Sharks always seem to be well-prepared for games but then for some reason don’t deliver the same clinical execution come match day. It is something they have identified as needing to be put right so they do not suffer two defeats in a row.

“The whole week we prepared so well for the Bulls but it did not carry over on to the field on match day. So the big focus is that: Carrying what we have done in our training sessions on to the playing field.

“We need the same effort, execution and consistency. I believe it’s a focus thing and we need to get the individual roles right in the structure.

“That wasn’t great against the Bulls, for some reason we didn’t focus enough on getting those basics done. We need to be present in the moment and firstly, understand all our roles and responsibilities,” Powell said.

Following an encouraging set-piece display in the win against the Lions at Ellis Park last weekend, Sharks prop Ox Nche is confident his team will be able to deliver the goods again when they host the Stormers in their United Rugby Championship match in Durban on Saturday.

The Sharks do seem to have settled down in terms of their scrummaging and much of the credit for that must go to their scrum coach, Akvsenti Giorgadze, the former Georgia hooker who joined the franchise at the start of the URC season. The home side will need to be at their best in the set-piece to counter a strong Stormers scrum led by powerhouse Springbok loosehead Steven Kitshoff.

“The Lions average four or five penalties a game won and at 2-2 last weekend at Ellis Park, it was fairly even,” Nche said on Tuesday. “We were pretty happy, being our first match back.

“We can only get better and there’s not much difference between the guys coming off the bench and the front row that starts, we have all worked hard and put in the same effort.

“We have a good system in place with Akvsenti, he keeps it fairly simple. It’s an all-eight effort and he is very good with the little things like our shape and technique. He brings confidence.

“And he insists on attitude as well, he expects forwards to be forwards! He tries to bring the best out of every player and he’s doing that, we have a good relationship,” Nche said.

The Sharks scored six tries in beating the Lions 47-37 and some of them were dazzling efforts showcasing the brilliant skills of their Springbok-laden backline. Nche, wearing the No.1 jersey and playing an important role in winning the time and space for the backs to flourish, knows the whole team will have to take another step up against the Stormers, who lead the way in the South African franchise, two points ahead of the Sharks.

“The Springboks really put their hands up against the Lions and kept their form, which was good to see,” Nche said. “We have some really special backs.

“But it’s going to be a good challenge this weekend against Kitshoff and the boys. We were shocked when we saw they were 18-0 up in the first half at Loftus Versfeld. We expected the Bulls to come out steaming.

“This Saturday, whoever pitches on the day and executes their plan will come out on top and it’s going to be a pretty good challenge. The Stormers will come here with big confidence.

“We have to man up and be at our best. If we can pull it off, it would be a major win for us, and especially for me because it will be the first time I’m playing with fans back at home,” Nche said.
