Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers showed they might just be the tonic for the struggling Proteas T20 team with their brilliant batting in the second week of the Indian Premier League.

The cricketing gifts of AB de Villiers are considered in India to be as sacred as myrrh and the 37-year-old was at his plundering best this week when he slammed 76 not out off just 34 balls for the Bangalore Royal Challengers against the Kolkata Knight Riders, winning the man of the match award. And then nah, the Royal Challengers did not need him to bat in their next match as they thrashed the Rajasthan Royals by 10 wickets.

Faf du Plessis is opening the batting for the Chennai Super Kings and has been building up over the two weeks of the tournament and is now in full flow. After his duck in the opening match, Du Plessis sauntered to 36 not out off 33 balls as Chennai chased just 107 against the Punjab Kings with ease, was then more explosive with his 33 off 17 deliveries versus Rajasthan and then he struck a ferocious 95 not out off just 60 balls to set up victory over Kolkata.

Kagiso Rabada has not been the same wicket-taking force he was last year when he was the IPL’s leading wicket-taker and he has not been particularly economical either. The fast bowler took one for 43 in four overs against Punjab and one for 25 in three overs versus the Mumbai Indians, and now has overall figures of four wickets for 98 runs in 11 overs.

Lungi Ngidi returned to being one of the Chennai Super Kings’ family’s favourite sons when he returned to IPL action this week with outstanding figures of three for 28 in four overs against Kolkata. Two of those wickets, including the scalp of the dangerous Dinesh Karthik for 40 off 24 balls, came in successive overs, the 15^th and 17^th, as KKR fell 18 runs short in their chase.

Chris Morris, the most expensive player in the IPL auction, bowled well to take two for 33 in four overs against Chennai, but then conceded 38 runs in three overs as Bangalore hammered Rajasthan by 10 wickets. Morris was not able to repeat his heroics with the bat in the first week, scoring a two-ball duck against CSK and 10 off 7 deliveries versus RCB.

Troubles still seem to weigh heavily on Quinton de Kock as he scored a sluggish 40 off 39 balls for Mumbai against Hyderabad Sunrisers and then two off four deliveries versus Delhi Capitals, following his 2 (6) in the first week.

David Miller’s showings in the IPL so far accurately reflect the ins and outs of the middle-order batsman’s lot in T2 cricket: Lauded in the first week for his 62 off 43 balls that set up an unlikely victory for Rajasthan against Delhi, this week he has been out for 2 (5) and 0 (2).

Marco Jansen has not played since appearing and impressing in the Mumbai Indians’ first two games, but the 20-year-old is adding a ton of experience to his resume just being in the defending champions’ camp.

Anrich Nortje and the experienced Imran Tahir are yet to play for the Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings respectively.

Faf du Plessis has seen the Proteas crumple in more World Cups than is probably fair for one player to have to go through and yet the veteran former captain is still excited about the prospect of playing in two T20 World Cups in the next 20 months and even maybe the next 50-over tournament, scheduled for 2023.

It was revealed on Tuesday that Du Plessis will no longer be one of the 16 contracted Proteas for the coming year, but he told The Citizen on Wednesday that this was expected because he is only available for T20 cricket this year.

“I’m only available for T20 cricket this year as I mentioned in my Test retirement statement. I haven’t heard any communication from CSA regarding contracts, but I know they are looking into getting us involved in T20 cricket because there are two World Cups in that format in the next two years. Two T20 World Cups in a row is going to be fire [emoji],” Du Plessis said in a WhatsApp.

India will host the next T20 World Cup in October/November this year, while Australia, who were due to hold the event last year before the Covid-19 pandemic arrived, will stage the tournament at the same time in 2022.

“There isn’t much ODI cricket this season and the ODI World Cup is only in 2023. Next season might be different in terms of games and also then the 2023 World Cup preparation, but for now with it being so far away, it’s better to build with players that can gain plenty games under their belts,” the 36-year-old added.

Du Plessis averages 57.87 in his 23 50-over World Cup appearances at the 2011, 2015 and 2019 tournaments, while he also played in the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy events. He also played in three T20 World Cups, in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

Du Plessis, who has been a stalwart of the Indian Premier League with 84 appearances, has previously indicated he is eager to play in more global T20 leagues around the world. Following the Proteas tour of Pakistan, he played three matches for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League before that tournament’s suspension due to a spate of Covid-19 cases.

Whatever holiday time he has had since then will be drawing rapidly to a close as the next edition of the IPL is due to start on April 9.

They may not have Quinton de Kock nor Faf du Plessis, but the Titans are not in any way uncomfortable with their absence as they start their CSA T20 Challenge campaign against the Knights at Kingsmead on Friday morning, thanks to the riches in playing depth they have and their unavailability being communicated well in advance.

Even without De Kock, who is on a “mental health break”, and Du Plessis, heading to the Pakistan Super League to join Dale Steyn at the Quetta Gladiators, the Titans have six White Proteas to squeeze into the five slots allowed for them and it seems champion off-spinner Simon Harmer will not be playing in the opening game on Friday, thus allowing batsman Theunis de Bruyn to get a shot. The other White Proteas in the squad are captain Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, Dean Elgar and Chris Morris, who on Thursday became the most expensive overseas player ever in the IPL.

“We’re probably a bit overstocked to be honest and Quinny and Faf not being available was communicated to us early on. It wouldn’t make sense to force them to play. Quinny was very open and honest with us a while ago that he would need a break after the Pakistan tour and Faf put in his request to skip the competition a while ago too. It doesn’t make sense to force people to play when they’re not in a good space, they’re unlikely to perform well,” Titans CEO Jacques Faul told The Citizen on Thursday.

Pace bowler Kyle Abbott is another conspicuous absentee from the Titans squad having only played the one Momentum One-Day Cup match for them since his high-profile signing. But Faul confirmed they “still have long-term plans” for Abbott, who has played 11 Tests, 28 ODIs and 21 T20s for the Proteas.

The Knights only have three Proteas in their squad – veteran Farhaan Behardien, Pite van Biljon and new international Jacques Snyman, but it is surely only a matter of time before Raynard van Tonder and Migael Pretorus earn their first caps and the Central Franchise are a well-balanced, powerful outfit.

While an injury-depleted Sri Lankan side beaten 2-0 on the Highveld is not going to provide the best measure of the Proteas’ progress as a Test side, South Africa have nevertheless ticked some boxes in the recent series. These are the positives coach Mark Boucher can carry forward to the tour of Pakistan and then the home series against Australia.

• The Proteas have a pair of veteran batsmen in Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis that the rest of the batting line-up can bat around.

The gritty, tenacious qualities of Elgar at the top of the order have always been apparent, but the 33-year-old is now also leading from the front with a more positive, aggressive mindset. Good starts are crucial for a batting line-up to consistently produce the goods and Elgar’s reliability is undimmed.

Du Plessis has brushed aside any suggestions his Test days may be numbered through his sheer hunger to still be playing, to still improve and still be scoring big runs. To have him in the crucial No.4 position, looking as good as he ever has, is a massive boon for the Proteas.

• Lutho Sipamla’s successful introduction to Test cricket has increased South Africa’s pool of quality fast bowlers.

Sipamla suffered a nervy first day in Test cricket when he bowled his first 12 overs for 66 runs, going maiden and wicket-less. But he ended the series with highly creditable stats of 10 wickets for 167 runs; in other words, after his tough start, he bowled 27.5 overs and took 10 for 101. Although obviously still raw, the 22-year-old showed he certainly has something. The spells where he was able to find a consistent line and length were especially probing.

With Kagiso Rabada making his way back from injury, Beuran Hendricks also in the picture and much excitement over the potential of Glenton Stuurman, the Proteas have half-a-dozen quicks to choose from.

• Wiaan Mulder has the potential to do a similar all-round job to Jacques Kallis.

Mulder is ostensibly a batting all-rounder, but we only saw glimpses of his talent with the bat during his useful innings of 36 in the first Test. But his bowling was a revelation as he finished the series with nine wickets at an average of just 20.55. The 22-year-old has wonderful skill with the ball and is clearly a thinking bowler. His control was also very good and, as Boucher said, he is not just a holding bowler but he also has a reputation for having a golden arm so he makes timely breakthroughs, as he did in both Tests. Which makes him an ideal fourth seamer, much like Kallis was. They are both bustling, strong bowlers and while Mulder will surely never touch the same heights of batting greatness as Kallis, he certainly has the ability to be an important run-scorer in the top six even.

• Rassie van der Dussen has made an encouraging start to life at No.3

Replacing the great Hashim Amla was always going to be massive boots to fill, but Van der Dussen has performed creditably at one-down in the batting order, averaging 45 there in four innings, with two half-centuries. His slow start at the Wanderers drew an unnecessary amount of criticism and the fact that his approach was perfect for the match situation was borne out by the collapse of nine wickets for 84 runs that happened after his matchwinning partnership of 184 with Elgar.
