The energy levels of our DP World Lions men’s team are obviously high and they have had the benefit of a full week’s preparation ahead of their first outing in the defence of their CSA 4-Day Series title as they host the Momentum Multiply Titans from Tuesday.

Our Pride’s last outing saw them clinch the CSA T20 Challenge title in the most emphatic of fashion, hammeriing the self-same Titans in the final, having beaten their Gauteng derby rivals earlier in the week in Qualifier 1.

The Titans will now return to the DP World Wanderers Stadium bullring and Russell Domingo, #ThePrideOfJozi head coach, has warned that their neighbours will be hurting and keen for revenge.

But most of the DP World Lions squad named for the four-day opener played a major role in last season’s triumph, as well as being key members of the squad that won the CSA T20 Challenge last month, so there is plenty of confidence in our Pride’s camp.

“We played a warm-up game and we’ve had net sessions in the last week, so it has been good prep. There’s a good vibe in the squad and the energy levels are high. If you asked us what was the trophy we most want to win, it would be the red-ball one.

“It would have been a nightmare week if we had lost the final, but the Titans will bring a really good team and they will be hurting. There are never any easy games against them, but we are all up for the challenge,” Domingo said.

Connor Esterhuizen, who finished as the DP World Lions’ leading run-scorer in the triumphant T20 campaign, will again be wearing the wicketkeeper’s gloves with Wandile Makwetu still recovering from his broken finger.

The seasoned Josh Richards and the exciting young Mohammed Manack are set to open the batting, with the class of captain Dominic Hendricks and Zubayr Hamza to follow. Mitchell van Buuren will be the mainstay of the middle-order, while Delano Potgieter, the hero of last season’s four-day final, fills the all-rounder berth.

The exciting trio of Lutho Sipamla, whose demolition job on the Titans in the T20 final earned him a recall to the Proteas squad, Tshepo Moreki and Codi Yusuf will look after the pace bowling department, while Bjorn Fortuin and Junaid Dawood, the joint leading wicket-taker in the T20 competition, are the spin bowlers in the squad.

Khaya Fakude is the new face in the team, the DP World Lions Academy batsman having impressed the coaching staff with his ability and talent. The KES and University of Johannesburg representative hails from Kanyamazane near Nelspruit.

Sharks eighthman Sikhumbuzo Notshe certainly has the x-factor gene in abundance, but he says his focus is on the basics as he continues his comeback from serious injury. It is an attitude the profligate Sharks team in general would probably benefit from after their embarrassing lack of finishing cost them against Edinburgh last weekend.

Notshe ruptured his patella last May and only returned to action at the beginning of February. Starting in the Currie Cup, his form has been good enough to see him reinstalled as the Sharks’ first-choice eighthman in the United Rugby Championship side.

“There are always a lot of extras one can focus on in rugby and I know I’ve got x-factor,” Notshe said on Tuesday. “But that’s not my focus going into games.

“I just try and get into as many battles as I can, make as many tackles as I can, make sure I set the maul properly if that’s my job.

“I just try and do the industrial work first, my other abilities will come naturally. In terms of my best, I’m not there yet and I am still working hard.

“The road to recovery was tough, but I had the best rehab and support I could get here at the Sharks in Dean Macquet [head physio] and Jimmy Wright [head biokineticist]. But it was a helluva road,” Notshe said.

In terms of fixing the disgraceful finishing shown in their last match, when they spent much of the game in the Edinburgh 22 but could only score one try, Notshe said you needed to look at individual errors, which can only be fixed on the training field.

“Our conversion rate in the 22 has not been great, we know how to get there but we just can’t finish off our opportunities.

“It comes down to individual errors and we need to clean up our own personal games. You can only do that through time in the saddle, on the training pitch. We need to put ourselves in those situations over and over again.

“And you can never make the weather an excuse. We’re playing at home, in front of our people, so we must always have energy. We can control that but we can’t control the weather.

“We don’t want to be a side that makes excuses and you can’t wait for a sunny day in Durban. We must always express ourselves,” Notshe said.

DURBAN, KwaZulu-Natal – In this economically-depressed time when sponsors are not exactly queuing up to get involved in sport, Vodacom’s partnership with golf has provided a great example of how a holistic approach can benefit not just the competitors but also whole communities.

Vodacom’s Origins of Golf Series is the longest-running pro-am series of events in the Sunshine Tour’s stable and the 17^th edition comes to Mount Edgecombe Country Club Estate this week for the third leg. Covid and civil unrest has made for a tough time in KwaZulu-Natal of late, but the sense of joy at being able to play golf and network with fellow human beings from all walks of life was palpable during the 36-hole Pro-Am that ended on Wednesday.

For Vodacom KZN Managing Executive Chris Lazarus just arriving at the golf course made him extremely happy.

“When I drove in, just to see all the flags and banners was great and something we haven’t seen around here for such a long time. It gives you the sense that the world is returning to some sort of normality. We believe in investing in what people what and not necessarily what Vodacom wants. It’s been really good for people to be able to let their hair down a bit..

“The name ‘Origins’ is indicative of where things start and we want to be feeding into career-building. As a company, Vodacom want to be hosting events from the grassroots up. We want to help all our customers, to get that feeling of community going. So we are focused on development, helping the youngsters out there all the way up to our present pros,” Lazarus said.

While the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series has helped launch many stellar professional careers – the likes of Thomas Aiken, Hennie Otto, Jean Hugo, George Coetzee, Darren Fichardt and Jaco Ahlers are all past winners – there are many people associated with the golf industry who are facing enormous difficulty at the moment.

“We want to go from just sponsoring a game to being good for society, similar to Vodacom’s involvement in other sports like rugby and soccer. We are not just ticking the box of hosting an event for a few days, we are also uplifting caddies, women’s golf and underprivileged kids, and we want to make a contribution that changes lives and society.

“Traversing all walks of life is very important for Vodacom and so we worry about our caddies, gender inclusivity and our under-developed communities. Of course there is a legacy involved in a tournament that started in 2004 and many of the golfers have built careers for themselves with our help,” Lazarus said.

Vodacom will be donating money to the rebuilding programme in KZN and, along with Spar, held a trolley dash on Wednesday afternoon for the benefit of Anthony Michael’s caddie, who won the lucky draw.

Thomas Abt, the Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, said the Vodacom partnership was a great example of a relationship that really works.

“The Vodacom Origins of Golf is the longest-running pro-am series on tour and the series has worked for so long because it is the right blend of networking and brand awareness that Vodacom are looking for. Vodacom are a very dynamic company and so is the Sunshine Tour. That’s why the synergy has worked so well for such a long period. Long may it continue,” Abt said.

Saturday’s SuperRugby final that the Lions will host at Ellis Park against the Crusaders is going to benefit not just the rugby franchise but the entire city of Johannesburg, according to CEO Rudolf Straeuli.

A sell-out crowd of more than 60 000 has already been confirmed for the showdown as the Lions look to complete their fairytale resurgence by beating the most successful team in SuperRugby history and becoming only the second South African side to win the southern hemisphere franchise competition.

“Hosting the final is going to be a huge benefit for everyone who finds value at Ellis Park. It’s not just the union that benefits, it obviously also helps the Ellis Park Stadium Pty and it’s a huge marketing opportunity for the Lions company and a great honour to host the final. There’s the money from the tickets and hospitality and some extra reward in the form of the prizemoney. None of that was budgeted for, so it’s a bonus.

“But it’s also a big positive for Johannesburg, the whole city, and especially the Ellis Park precinct, all our neighbours. We are really blessed to be able to host such great events, we’ve had the All Blacks here before and the Test against France this year was also a big success,” Straeuli told The Citizen on Tuesday.

The Lions have not only established themselves at the pinnacle of South African rugby, but have also had to manoeuvre themselves out of troubled financial waters in the last five years.

“You can’t take anything away from the team because they are our flagship, and our juniors have done very well too with our Craven Week side being the best and our U21s and U19s winning their competitions last year. But a few years ago we were a business that was having retrenchments. But some staff took pay-cuts and simplicity has been key to our operations.

“We don’t have a big staff for the big area we have to manage and we have had to cut our cloth according to our needs. But there’s a really positive mood and success breeds further success. Plus people like Kevin de Klerk (president) and Altmann Allers (vice-president) are serious businessmen. If we didn’t have them behind us and their business acumen and that of the board, never mind their own money they have put in, then we wouldn’t be here,” Straeuli said.
